If you want to get into IDWs universe in particular (Not the old Marvel Comics or Dreamwave universes) then I think you have 2 main options.

The first is to start with the Infiltration miniseries that began the IDW G1 Universe. The first few miniseries by Furman move a bit slow at times but are generally well written and lay the groundwork for the universe.

After those minis though you come to "All Hail Megatron" and then the first ongoing. These are generally considered in a much less positive light by fans. They tended to ignore alot of stuff from the earlier minis, ramble around aimlessly or through big plot holes, and featured inconsistent or nonexistant characterization. There are folks who enjoyed them but the general response was less than favorable. There are a few gems in these runs, but a LOT of dreck all around them, IMO.

The Second option is to start where the current books start: With the "Death of Optimus Prime" one-shot that sets up everything for the two WONDERFUL current ongoings More Than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise.

-ZacWilliam, I'd say it depends how big a investment in time or money you want to make to get up to speed.

Most definitely get in on the new ongoings.

The rest can get thrown in the trash can basically with the exception of Last Stand of the Wreckers and the Ironhide mini series.

The new stuff makes u proud to be a Transformer fan again

A minseries, since collected in Trade Paperback form, was made showcasing his origin. It's literally called Megatron origins.

In addition, it helps to read Ongoing #22 and 23, which are in the Chaos Theory trade and fill in some of the gaps from Megatron Origins.

    Plus, they're awesome.

I'd say just read the 'Death of Optimus Prime' one-shot, then the two current ongoings. You can always go back and read earlier stuff later if you feel like it. But starting from the One-shot is fine. It's a good jumping on point.

I say start with The Death of Optimus Prime and the two new ongoings.

Megatron: Origins is pretty crappy and mostly disregarded by most writers, so feel free to skip it.

Here's what i own in publishing order with my ratings:
    Infiltration 3/5
    Stormbringer 4/5
    Escalation 5/5
    Devastation 3/5
    Revalation 5/5
All Hail Megatron (HC) 5/5(most other will say 3/5 though)
    For all Mankind 4/5
    Bumblebee 2/5
    Ironhide 4/5
Last Stand of the wreckers 5/5
    International Incident 3/5
More Than meets the eye #1 5/5
    Robots In Disguise #1 4/5

Im missing quite a few (Megatron Origin, Maximum Dinobots, Spotlights 1-3, Drift, Revenge of the Decepticons, Heart of Darkness, Infestation, Chaos Theory, Police action, Chaos, Death of Optimus Prime) and while my mum is buying the spotlights and the latest ongoings + Autocracy for me on her phone, im not planning to buy any others until the Prime toyline is over

I say start with Megaton Origin and then head into Infiltration and the spotlights.

Just start from the beginning. If you're reading trades, the IDW series is very digestible and fun.

Money wise, I have to agree that the best currennt jumping on point would be the 2 new onging series. But for me I NEED the whole story so I'm gradually catching up starting with infiltration. I also VERY HIGHLY recomend Maxamium Dinobots if your a Grimlock/Donobot fan, but without reading some of the earlier mini-series' some of it will be lost on you. I'd also recomend Last Stand of the Wreckers, it's a bit over hyped to me but still a great read. And to finish, I personally liked All Hail Megatron quit a bit, it does get a little slow at times but in general is very good, I hven't read enough of the original IDW ongoing to say one way or the other on it.

yeah I'd recommend just starting with the Death of Optimus and then jumping into the two new ongoings

If you want more then i'd recommend Megatron Origins, the Chaos Theory two parter, Last Stand of the Wreckers, and even the Drift mini-series. All great reads and all add to/support the story the ongoings tell right now. [Outside of that maybe Stormbringer. It would be a nifty little off-shoot but I wouldnt really call it necessary to whats going on currently.]

But those are my recommendations if you're looking to jump on and not get bogged down by YEARS of back issues.

guys, can you help me with this question. i see a bunch of people mentioning "the death of optimus,"

ive read almost all the tpb through police action and i have the next one, number 7 chaos, on order. is the death of optimus in that tpb?

or is it coming in one of the two new ongoing series tpb?

or is it not in any of the tpb?
