Since a lot of people are still confused about the difference between regular plastic breakage under stress and the infamous Gold Plastic Syndrome, here's a Youtube video that shows exactly how GPS works:

For any of the GPS-suffering toys whose molds are still in existence and usable, can we ask Hasbro and Takara to reissue them again WITHOUT the gold plastic?

Y'know, just so we can actually play with them. I'm sure people would more than happy to buy non-crumble-into-dust reissues of these toys.

Yup.... this blows. Awhile back I sold all of my G2 toys here on the boards. When I first opened up the container where they were stored to sort through them my Electro and Slingshot both practically exploded in my hands when I tried to transform them.

Wow, that was just awful. Poor Randy. I think this is the first time I've ever seen a Transformer intentionally destroyed.

This is why I still don't have a Transmetal Megatron. Even though he looks like an awesome toy, I'm waiting until I can find a Japanese one for a reasonable price.

I think the only one I got that might have gps is Cybertron Beast Megatron but still not sure if it's the right kind of plastic.

A good decision. Any American transmetal Megatron will go "Darth Maul" on you.

Just to debunk this all too comon myth - Transmetal Megatron DOES NOT suffer from GPS. He is just poorly made using sub-standard materials. The black plastic in his waist is quite thin and the screw that holds his torso together isn't long enough, so eventually it will wear down and snap.

Yikes! I don't even touch any of my TF's that are prone to GPS. I should make a shelf dedicated strictly to those figures, and make a "Do not touch!" sign for them.

Any toy that is known to have gps is doomed. Take great care of them and you can make them last longer.

I live in constant fear of silverbolt of Magnaboss fame crumbling like wet chalk. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I had a junker silverbolt that I experimented on. It snaps with reasonable force at the weakest points, but its certainly weaker than regular plasic.

Except for the ones that stay MISB, and even then that isn't a guarantee. I have a Randy I bought MISB in 2007 that I actually opened and transformed to robot mode once. Very, very carefully. I know that as long as I never touch him again he'll be fine.
