Several people said theirs have it, but others (including me) have a perfectly fine Starscream (well, minus ordinary paint wear, in my case).

So how many people actually have a Protoform Starscream that suffers from GPS?

Please note that a simple case of plastic breaking under stress is not GPS. GPS is when the plastic becomes extremely brittle and eventually crumbles into tiny shards under minimal pressure. There are no stress marks that occur prior to breakage. Toys suffering from GPS virtually crumble into dust in your hands.

... aaaaand just as I was going to check my Starscream, who use to be perfectly fine until now, I discovered one of the elbow joints had broken. Still not sure if it's GPS or regular stress breakage, as the joint is extremely tight.

Interesting. I'll have to check mine a little later, once I remember where I put him

How long does it normally take for a figure to succumb to GPS then? My Starscream appears to be fine, but he's only been around for four years. I thought it would have to be at least double that before any effects would be apparent, *if* Starscream is indeed susceptible to it.

GPS varies. I've had toys like Skyhammer crumble as early as a few years later (early 90s at the latest), others are still in one piece now (Pyro).

My Protoform Starscreams were fine the last time I checked them. Don't know why I've got two of the thing.

There's no telling when it can happen.

It all depends on how much you actually mess around with the figure. Do you play with it regurley, occasianly, rarely etc?

Mine's ok - I've always thought environment might be a factor as I keep all my toys in a relatively cool room with very little temperature fluctuations, out of direct sunlight.

My TM Megatron is fine after many years, although I admit I'm kind of scared to touch him now...

Transmetal Megatron is not affected by GPS, just a poor design constructed using weak materials.

Really? I always thought it was GPS (or more like.. BPS)... Then it must be fine because I've been very careful with him. Or maybe the international release had better plastic? Who knows.

Very common misconception, it IS a form of GPS. And the Beast Wars Metals one appears to be safe from whatever causes it, whether it be GPS or bad design.

I actually have 2 Starscreams (one bought when the movie came out, one I got later in auction for both of the "entry mode" figures when I only wanted Prime, but it was the cheapest auction at the time), and neither one of them is broken. But right now both of them are off the shelf and in a bin, so I havent checked them in a while.

I bought the original just because I wanted to see if he -would- suffer from GPS as I'd never seen the phenomenon in person, and I would occasionally take him off the shelf and give his joints a twist, but nothing ever broke (and like you said, the joints were tight). But I admittedly lost interest and now that he's in the bin, I might never know

I heard the ones affected by GPS were painted (or suffered after being custom-painted, I dunno). Can anyone confirm that?

I'll have to check mine for any GPS symptoms, it's down in the garage... in a big blue tub.

So is it a common misconception just because the plastic is not GOLD? From what I understood about GPS, it isn't necessarily the color of the plastic but how it was molded. If the plastic color had "whispy" or "wavy" lines in it, I was under the impression that it was not properly cured, so to speak, and that is the reason for the crumbling. It just so happens to be gold or brown plastic in most instances, maybe those particular colors don't blend well before molding....I don't know.

As far as I know (i'll check when I get home later) my Starscream was ok and had been transformed a few times, but my BWs TM Megatrons arms snapped off several years ago with barely any pressure at all.
