Pretty sure the last figure in recent years to have GPS was Protoform Starscream and/or Legends Scorponok. Nothing since. Don't worry, GPS is long gone/

It's not that kind of gold plastic with the swirls.

Look at Razorclaw's head, it's a golden yellow color and not that gold you see on the likes of G2 Slingshot, Black Zarak, or Universe Micromaster Superion.

That's why the gold is mostly painted (over that golden yellow plastic) to create that nice golden look without using gold plastic that would rot over the years.

Not to derail the thread but, will MP Grimlock have "gold plastic syndrome" as well?

He has gold plastic (with swirls in it) where his arms attach to his torso in robot mode.

If it's got swirls, it's at risk. The swirls are really the best sign of future problems.

Didn't Blazemaster from the movie line have goldish swirly plastic too?

No, my protoform starscream crumbled, and I've heard reports of at least two others from trustworthy people. Since it's not widespread, it was likely fixed during the production run.

There is no gold plastic on MP grimlock. His arms attach to his body via a black plastic ball mounted on die-cast metal pieces painted gold.

Likewise, PoweredConvoy is correct, Predaking has a pale gold plastic without swirls, which is then covered in gold paint except for on Razorclaw's head. it's safe.

From dust and chips the plastic came, to dust and chips the plastic shall return. All things are impermanent.

Only thing I can think to do would be to disassemble every piece at risk if you're storing the figure, so it's not under any stress at the joints, but even this doesn't guarantee protection.

    Nope.

He has no gold plastic at all. He's got plastic that has gold chrome on it, gray plastic painted gold, and diecast metal painted gold.

It is also possible the plastic mixture has been changed or improved, but reports regarding Protoform Starscream do not inspire confidence.

I think the Japanese Animated figures are safe though, since they were all painted, right?

How can you tell, if the metallic plastic is swirly? edit: Oh, if the plastic doesn't have metallic flake in it (and thus, no swirls), there's a good chance it could be safe.

Yeah, they're all painted. You strip the paint off, and they're mostly the same colors as the hasbro versions.

Jetpack Bumblebee has a similar safe, pale gold plastic as predaking. No worries there.

Anyone know if Carnivac and Snarler suffer from GPS? Bought them on Ebay and am waiting for them to arrive.

Those two don't even have any gold or metallic anything on them.

You know, this makes me wonder... my Generations Thrust has swirls in the dark red/burgundy plastic, and I do believe my Generations Thundercracker also has swirls in the blue. I'm at work, so I can't double-check, but is this cause for concern?

Swirly plastic in-and-of itself isn't a concern. There'd probably be a good number of Alternators Tracks and Hounds ground into dust now, otherwise.

There's specifically a bonding problem with gold colours of plastics, it seems.

And note, the North American version of Transmetal Megatron, who's noted to have GPS-like symptoms, has it affect the non-metallic dark brown plastic. The swirly metallic bronze plastic on him is fine.

Is the plastic that his arms are attached to (in robot mode) actually gold or is it just another color plastic that is painted gold?

    *Please be the 2nd one.*

As I already said, the gold parts that the black balls are mounted on are metal, painted gold. Touch the parts, they're cold to the touch.

There is no gold plastic on that toy.
