    Hey all!

This Friday, I'm departing on a two-week college trip to Tokyo. It's a really cool program-- the first week actually will be filled by two credit courses; the second week is all sight-seeing. I'm really excited-- not the least of which because we're going with Bernard Chang and Stan-fscking-Sakai as visiting artists.

But enough about that. What I wanna know, TFW2k5, is what should I do in my few free times? What are some of the sights I should see? I know at least some of you have been in Japan-- if anybody knows a great toystore or eatery or anything, I'm all ears.

    Thanks!

Two of my favorite places to go when I lived there was Shijuku and Akihabara. I'm a culture buff. I liked to do what the locals do. One thing you must do is have a meal at one of the many cart or food stands in Japan.

One suggestion. If you are enjoying the Tokyo night life and headed back where you are staying. Do not fall asleep on the train in you are taking it. Missing your stop and having no idea where you are is not groovy...:gen069:

    Generally speaking I recommend..

Akihabara - the otaku's mecca, of course.

Shibuya, Harajuku, Omote Sando - the center of teenie fashion, so there're girls girls girls. It's a nice sight to see. Easy access from JR train and Tokyo Metro stations.

Tokyo Tower or Ropongi Hills Ovservation Deck - a view of Tokyo from 250m and 238m high is superb.

    Oedo Onsen Monogatari

Edo Era style hot springs spa like this, located in the major sightseeing area Odaiba.

There're also Aqua City (TRU is here), Venus Fort, Palette Town, Tokyo Mega Web nearby. Accessible by Yurikamome monorail.

Welcome to Tokyo, and have a nice trip! ;)

Massage parlors. I...err...a friend told me they're awesome.

Other than the kinky stuff, definetely check out the food. Go to an authentic sushi bar. The place I went was called KuruKuru. It seemed like a chain but I really don't know. Go to one with an actual rotating bar. Hands down better than any sushi you'll get anywhere else. Maybe if you're lucky they'll gut the fish and then put it on display in front of you. Awesome. Also if you're a big guy like me you might get the shame of being out eaten by a little old Japanese woman. Man, can they put down some sushi!

If you don't speak Japanese I really recommend just going to a restaurant that doesn't offer an English menu and play what I called Japanese roulette. I never had a bad experience and it's a great way to try foods you'd never think to try. One time I got a bowl of tiny fried crabs and another time I had squid ink pasta. Both were awesome despite their drawbacks. Crabs were pokey and the ink dyed my mouth blackish-grey for a couple hours.

Make sure you take some time to check out some of the various shrines, temples, and historical architecture there. For us in North America, whose entire history stretches only a few hundred years, it can be an amazing experience to step foot into a place that's been there far longer than that. Also, some of them are absolutely beautiful.

Heh reminds me of some thing that happened to me while I lived in Japan.
My room mate and I went to Yokohama Gaspanic one night and did an all nighter. Somehow I got seperated from roomie (he probably picked up, ass) and decided to head home on the first train.

My home station was about 6 stations down on the JR Yokohama line. I get on the train, fall asleep. Being a bit pickled, I was very asleep, and got woken up at the end of the line by a JR employee. I stumble of the train, get to the other platform and jump on a JR Yokohama line heading back the other way.

    And fall asleep again.

And wake up back in Yokohama.

Get back on the train heading out, AND FALL ASLEEP.

I wake up with a start, notice some schoolgirls giggling at me and jump off the train without checking the stop. I'm one stop from my home station.

    I catch a cab home.

What you should really do is offend every Japanese person you encounter by doing a really racist impression of Chinese talking. It'll be a double whammy.

Monster Island and say hi to Godzilla. Then head over to Infant Island and say hi to Mothra.
