I would have to say the theater owners are going overboard on this. The camera she had probably couldn't store more than 2 minutes of video much less two hours. And she was doing it to encourage her brother to see the film. So in addition to paying 20 dollars for two matinee tickets, probably another 10 for popcorn and soda, you also get the privilege of being under suspicion for piracy.

"Movie pirating cost the industry $18.2 billion worldwide in 2005"

How exactly do they come up with those numbers, and prove causality?

In canada, it is perfectly legal to record an entire film in the theatre, you just can't distribute it.

I don't see the problem. She did something against the law, and got sacked for it. She took the risk, she got caught, and she probably won't even have to pay a fine with that sob story of her's.

That just ain't right. Theater owners went WAY overboard on this, especially considering that it's not like she was recording from the start of the film. Any good pirate would, you know, record the WHOLE film. Theater owners FTL.

While I would suggest not trying to use any kind of recording equipment when you're watching a movie in the theater, this is definitely going overboard. She is obviously not trying to pirate the movie with that little camera; a simple "could you please not do that" from the theater staff would've sufficed.

I'm not going to argue about her doing something technically illegal. She recorded and got caught. It's what happened afterward that's the issue. Normally you would get kicked out of the theater and maybe get your camera confiscated. However charging her a crime for piracy when the device she was using can't even hold an entire movie trailer, much less a full length film is like being sentenced a year in jail for jaywalking.

A powershot can hold way more than a movie trailer, and deprending on the SD card she had in there, she could easily have pirated the whole movie.

But that's not really the point. The point is she knew full well the consuquences of her actions (or at least she should have, good god), and it was that blatent disregard that probably enraged the manager to the point of calling the police.

Besides, she's going to get off, what's the point to it? She doesn't even make a good example.

No, law is still law. Enforcement is the issue here.

I'm surprised no one has said "I'd tap it" in regards to the girl's picture yet.

At this point movies at the theater cost almost as much as buying the DVD that's the real reason sales have declined...wait no several movies just made hundreds of millions of dollars this year, hmmm perhaps that's because there was something worth going to the theater for. The real reason sales were down is that many people feel that they might as well just wait till it comes out on DVD and save money. Most bootlegs quailty aren't good enough to justify buying them anyway. And the people I know who were stupid enough to do so bought the commercial DVD when it came out because it had better quality. As for the events that happened here, yes they are really over reacting.
