This got re-released recently directly by the Japanese publisher Kodansha. Same translation as the Dark Horse release by the looks of it.

Anyway picked this up as I've always been interested in the franchise and never read the manga, I have to say it's pretty good. I'm a sucker for the late-80's-early-90's stuff and the art certainly reflects it. One really big change that's acutally kinda refreshing in the manga is its a lot more light in tone compared to the anime. Does not get bogged down so much in heavy conversation and the characters are nowhere near as serious as their animated counterparts (lot more humor).

Print is my least favorite version of GITS, but the original is still great.

1.5 is pretty decent as well, but the less said about 2 the better.

Yeah, I enjoyed it, and I agree with Yak, 1.5 is great too, definitely pick it up. It's more procedural then the original, much like the TV show.

2 was ok, but the lack of Batou made me sad. he was there, but not much.

The manga. The original was just "Ghost in the Shell." A sequel was made called "Ghost in the Shell 2: Man Machine Interface." Later, some previously unreleased stuff was released that took place before MMI compiled and titled "Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human Error Processor."

Well, then, pick up 1.5 when you can. It's good. :)

Is the new release still "flopped" (reading from left-to-right) like the previous English editions?

Half way through the book now, have to say I think this is my favorite GITS so far :lol  Don't get me wrong I like the movie and SAC but I think I like this more as it's a bit lighter and not so talky and serious all the time which I find tends to bog the anime versions down a bit.

Yeah it's flipped, I like it better that way though, I still have trouble reading right to left when it comes to manga.

I still like SAC the best, as it's a great balance with the seriousness of the movies but with the humor of Batou and the Tachi/Fuchikomas from the manga. Either way, I heart Shirow Masamune.

    And I'm serious Ryan, get 1.5. :D

Yeah, but it's sorta weird having everyone suddenly left-handed.. and driving on the right-hand side of the road despite being in Japan :p

Reading right-to-left is a little awkward for me too, but I'd rather see the art the way it was meant to be. Also, since it's been release L-T-R at least twice already, it would be nice to have it the other way for once for everyone else, doncha think?

Strangely all the rest of the GitS books were not flipped. Neither are the new Appleseed reprints. The original GitS stands alone. From what I understand though, Shirow did actually supervise the flip and even redid some of the art himself for the NA version, so it's better than a straight flip.

Honestly I dont care about the whole flipped/unflipped debate, just saying I prefer it flipped due to that's how we naturally read here. As long as book itself is good that's all I care about :)

The GiTS manga is what got me interested in the whole franchise. I found that it painted a much better picture of the world and philosophy that the first movie was trying to get across.

I still think it, along with pretty much most of Shirow's manga from that era, is a great read.

Wait, what? Now I'm gonna have to re-buy all of Appleseed >_<
I see what you did there.
I've heard that too, and it's one of the main reasons I'm OK with the version I've got. If they're gonna be re-releasing it, though... yeah, sort of disappointing.

But in all seriousness, manga Batou is the epitome of manliness. Who else could pull this off?
