While I was happy to get a new Hot Spot that isn't a Titanium, the Inferno mold is less than perfect. The transformation is wildly different from Hot Spot's, there's no ladder and no real breast plate.

Luckily, it's quite simple to transform him differently. I've seen some versions of this, but not with a new breastplate. Playing around with Inferno, I found that the transformation would accomodate a bigger breastplate, so I built it while I waited for my Hot Spot to arrive.

Theoretically, this mod can be made reversible by making a new hinge to replace the outer piece (that covers his back normally), but I trimmed off the outer layer to have just the hinge and a thin grid left. I glued the new breastplate to this and transformation is unchanged. Either way, you need to tap out the pin holding the hinge.

The ladder was taken from a toy fire truck. No modifications except painting it blue. I removed the water cannon and built a new hinge piece that goes on his forearm and holds the ladder (with a magnet) in truck mode. I then glued magnets inside the front window to hold the ladder in robot mode. Since the windows are tinted, it doesn't show.

Finally I just made some silver detailing for the legs, since Hot Spot looks very plain without them. The grooved styrene was expensive but well worth it.

There have been a couple using this method actually, personally i've done that with my Pyro (who is unfinished at this point) and someone else did a Micromaster homage.

Looks better than the normal transformation for characters that weren't just front of vehicle chests.

That's very cool. I think he needs some sort of waist armor to cover that screw though. Are those the G1 Hotspot/Defensor guns modded with 5mm posts?

The original guns actually fit into his hands but just barely.

Considering that the figure has a good alternate bot mode by simply reversing his arms and head... you'd think they'd have gone the extra mile and retooled the bit on his back to form a new chest.

Really... makes it a lot more than a simple retool... and even looks like a brand new bot.

    Nice idea.

I wonder if the shoulders can be swapped to put the screws on the back.

Unfortunately no, that makes the cover pieces sit too far apart in truck mode.

Looks fantastic! I'm hoping a 3rd party company does an upgrade set like this.
