So with G1 episodes airing on the Hub (TV) next week and new legends coming this winter, will that signify the start of the third generation of fans of the original (G3)?

Who knows? Maybe. If I could predict the future, I'd be a very rich man by now.

No, because it isn't the main TF series at this time.

Either way, call it something different. "G3" doesn't make any sense if you know what "Generation 2" originally meant.

Yeah, why not. But technically I would say Beast Wars were the real second era of TF, and the movie beckoned the third era and thus we are still in it.
G2 didn't really bring many people to the ball game.

Term g1 and g2 refers to the generation of transformers characters themselves not the generation of fans

I'll say yes, only because I have a feeling the G1 Episodes are going to be edited in some way, as America is more puss-ified than it was in the 80s. For example, that episode where Bluestreak says to that driver guy "Keep driving like that and you won't live long enough...not that that'd be any great tragedy" ain't gonna fly by today's overly anal-retentive, litigious standards.

Err, have you seen some of the stuff they show on CartoonNetwork? If anything I'd say cartoons are much edgier today than in the past. Plus, this is coming on at 12 at night, I doubt many kids are going to see it, let alone a whole new generation of G1 fans.

Yeah, but that crap is pretty much fart jokes, but hey I didn't know it was coming on that late, so hopefully they'll leave it alone. I guess we'll see this Saturday. Hey, either way, it's awesome to see G1 on the air again.

They've literally made menopause jokes on Cartoon Network, and depicted people being dragged to hell.

    This.

I'd say the third generation of fans started back in 2007.

First generation fans were those who came into it during the original run, broadly speaking. Guys like me who were around when the G1 toys were on shelves.

Second generation fans are those who were introduced to Transformers in the 90s, through Beast Wars, or even through Armada and its sequels.

Third generation fans are those who came into the franchise with the launch of the live action movie series.

Broadly speaking, that represents 10-11 year intervals - about the right amount of time for a whole new generation of kids to come along. It also fits with the major reboots of the franchise, though if you took it that way, the movies are actually the fourth significant reboot - the second was, in all honesty, not Generation 2 as it failed but Beast Wars as it succeeded, and then the third reboot was the Unicron trilogy and RiD.

    This.

Yeah, that sounds right. Whenever you see a "when did you come back?" thread, the answers are typically "here from the beginning," "Beast Wars," "RiD," and "Movie/Classics/Alts/MPs"

I was here for the original, but I came back with the RiD generation

Generation 1 and Generation 2 is more referring to characters and toys, not the fandom.

Exactly. The whole notion of "Generation 2" is actually pretty meaningless... as a toy line, as a fiction OR as a generation of fans. It was a marketing label on a lackluster attempt to re-launch the Transformers property. That makes it all the stranger that it was this label that retroactively created the whole concept of what we now identify as Generation 1

Funny how "G1" caught on, since nothing since (including G2) has really followed on, conceptually. I mean, nobody calls Beast Wars "Generation 3", though that's really what it was. In fact, arguably, it was the true "G2".
