what the hell was it?
The 2nd Generation of Transformers...
The original line of TF's had come to an end around '88 or '89 and there was no more Transformers. Then around '92 the line was re-booted. First with some repaints/slight remolds of original TF's (Prime, Sideswipe, Jazz, Inferno, Screamer, Ramjet etc.), then continued with really lame, new original molds... save the completely new Megatron. This new line was known as Generation 2.
The original line then became retroactively known as Generation 1.
Fictionally is a different story.
The US cartoon was just a reharsh of G1 Season 1 and 2 episodes with changes of bumpers, a CG intro, ect. But still the same ol episodes.
The US comic book was a continuation of the Marvel G1 comic. (Ditto for UK)
Japan took it in a different direction:
After the end of the Operation Combination wars, Convoy (Optimus Prime) and Megatron (now Action Masters due to a Nucleon story line told in Black Super Convoy's techspec) agree to peace and create a single faction, using the Zodiac and the Matrix (which Micromaster Hot Rod still had with him), they created a 2nd Cybertron* and thus the 2nd Generation of Transformers began. Of course war broke out and all the G2 toys were invovled, you can figure it out from there.
* Sadly this contradicts the manga version in which Rodimus found a "new home" at the end of Headmasters)
Garish repaints of G1 Transformers!
And some nice new molds. G2 Cyberjets are sweet, and there are some nice cars. I found a G2 Rapido in my basement that I had no recollection of buying, but apparently I did.
The Cyberjets were SO wonderful. It seemed like KB would have an infinite supply of them for $2.50 forever. I still have a few small stacks of 'em stockpiled.
And lets not forget the Laser Rods, who were IMO opinion pretty cool from soup-to-nuts, but fandom as whole generally owes them love for giving us Laser Optimus Prime
Who begot Black Convoy
Who begot RID Scourge
Who begot every Black-and-Teal Prime since
I love G2! I'm paying ridiculous amounts of money to re-create great swaths of it in modern-style custom figures
*Who won't get into the flipchangers/MW-figures or Spychangers/GoBots right now*
Don't forget E-Hobby Laser Ultra Magnus!
Technically the JAF-Con exclusive Convoy (Black Edition) came first (Black G1 repaint), which was March 19th 2000, 4 months before the Black Convoy toy in Car Robots was released (along with the episode "Friend or Foe?! Black Convoy!", that same week).
The first actual black repaint within the TF toy line was G1 Skywarp (1984).
The first actual EVIL black repaint with the TF toy line was Shadow Panther of Beast Wars Japan (Counter to the Cheetor/Cheetas mold)
It was awesome is what it was.
Windbreaker is the best Autobot minicar EVER.
Orange cars for the win....... but always known for his low octane.... dare I say.... BAD GAS...... oh ho ho ho......... *sigh*...... Erector...
I wish G2 never happened. So many Transformers died.
G2 is when articulation was invented.
Dammit, beat me to the obligatory Windbreaker fart joke.
thanks. so g2 is basically a remold, if you will, of g1. same stuff w/ new parts.
one more Q. if megs toy was a tank, what was he in the cartoon? painted over? cgi? a gun still?
The cartoon was just G1 reruns with CGI bumpers.
I still hope to one day get my hands on those Laser Rod Transformers. And the con' Rotorforce guys.
I didn't like having their names on them. I thought that was lame.
I like the G2 toys. They're awesome. Espicially Megs.
Just picked up G2 Starscream.. I was taken aback by the neon orangeyness of it all..
IF this is a toy thread...why not put it in the toy forum?
I only have 1 G2 figure- Sideswipe.
aside from a neon gun/paint app, he is nice. got him for 5 bucks at a Service Merchandise in '96...
Separate names with a comma.
