LOL Yup kids are going to be doing the same thing as the 1999 comercial! Gamestop is going to be giving out a limited amount of rainchecks For Wii's that must be paid upfront on the 20th and 21st of the month. People will be able to pick it up sometime late January. Does anyone find this kind of dumb?

I wonder if this will be like how preorders are handled, where even a full payment guarantees jack shit?

Haha, so, it's like a gift certificate only more limiting? The best part is that they don't really know for sure when they'll get enough Wii's in.

I can't believe that distribution is still a problem for the Wii a year out.

Thats what I find funny as well, plus I think it is a good way to bolster there numbers for this quarter cause they are losing so much money.

It's not a distribution problem. It's a marketting ploy.. "Oh we HAVE to get a Wii, because they are in short supply." Everytime I go to my friend's Gamestop store, they have some available.

Artificial demand. People are buying them, but the low production numbers are BS. The hardware architecture is similar to a GameCube. There's nothing rare about the chipset up at all.

The PS3's difficulties with last year's launch was legit. That "cell" processor was new, unique, and expensive.

I feel bad for the poor kid that opens a box with a frickin' raincheck. At lease Dark_Convoy's kid's are getting a Wii, even if it is "slightly used" now.

It's a lot of artificial demand being caused by a combination of Nintendo and the stores that sell the item. At my Target we always have a least five to ten wii's in stock, but we're only allowed to sell them during a week when they're in an add. So, basically, we stockpile them until they go on add (next one is this coming week and we have freakin' 85 of them stockpiled at our store, but we've been telling people that there aren't any!) and we'll be allowing people to buy them than. Stupid as hell IMO.

Really? Wow, that is crazy, I can't believe a retail chain would do that. People are likely to just find them elsewhere.

Believe it... and they have people so bamboozled that they believe it's actually due to a manufacturing shortage... Target has even gone so far as to put signs out where the Wii's should be displayed on their shelves to say this. :lol  It's kind of sick really...

It's mostly the retailers attempting to inflate the demand, I'd wager. Unlike their competitors, Nintendo actually makes money on each system sold, so if it were up to them, it would be in their best interests to sell as many as possible as quickly as possible, and that means having them available. There's already enough authentic demand anyway.

Artificial shortages (PS2, 360, and let's face it, there would have been a PS3 shortage with or without Blu-Ray and Cell problems) make sense when there's more incentive to create hype than to actually sell as many systems as possible, for instance when a console has a very high manufacturing price. In those cases, th money isn't in selling the product, it's in inspiring brand confidence in game publishers and consumers. Scarcity also makes a high price tag seem less unreasonable to the consumer.

As for the retailers, it makes sense to drive up demand with a fake (or deliberately exacerbated, they might be in short supply compared to demand anyway, but we don't know that if they don't put them out on shelves) shortage makes plenty of sense. If you stockpile something that's in high demand, then put them all out at once with an advertisement that "we've got this thing you've been trying forever to get" it will get a flood of people into the store. Your store. Where they might buy other things as well. Nintendo doesn't get anything out of this, as I doubt they give two shits how many people flock to GameStop on a particular day.
