Have you ever seen a title and thought it would be too kiddy or ridiculous in gameplay and music? But when you actually heard the soundtrack, you liked it? That's the basic question. What is a game that suprised you with how good the music is?

My answer is the 2003 released Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom. The boss themes alone are epic.

    Listen to the boss themes.

Transformers Armada (PS2) was not only an awesome game, but had a surprisingly awesome soundtrack too.

    Enchanted Arms.

I got it free with my PS3 and I didn't expect much from it. So I was surprised at how much I liked the soundtrack. I've listened to it while killing time on a few occations. I really like the batle themes and the Ice Queen's theme.

I ended up loving that game by the way. When I finish Final Fantasy 2 I should give it another playthrough.

Not going to mention the Zelda, Mario, Ace Combat, Uncharted, or Metal Gear series, because those games having great music is par for the course.

Alan Wake, the soundtrack is really quite fantastic, and has a great use of licensed and original music. The first chapter ends with Roy Orbison's "In Dreams." From that moment, I knew that the use of the music in the game was going to be fantastic. The music written for the game is even pretty fantastic. It features a fictional band that plays some of the songs you will be hearing in the game. Old Gods FTW!. Alan Wake OST - The Poet & The Muse - YouTube

Bastion had a really amazing OST. Its found its way into my normal playlist. I think its really worth buying this game's soundtrack by itself even if you dont think the game is going to be your cup of tea. Bastion Soundtrack - Setting Sail, Coming Home (End Theme) - YouTube

A game series that always surprises me with how good the music is, is the Total War series. It does a great job of setting the mood, and gets you pumped for your upcoming battle. Napoleon: Total War Main Menu Theme - YouTube and Total War : Shogun 2 - Ona Hei Music - YouTube

The themes used in Conker's Bad Fur Day/Conker: Live and Reloaded tend to stay in my head. Conker Live & Reloaded Soundtrack Windy - YouTube OH GOD ITS IN MY HEAD AGAIN!!!

The music (mix of licensed and original) in the Mafia games were really great and really captured the time periods of the games. Mafia Soundtrack - City Music - Hoboken - YouTube , Mafia 2 Soundtrack - Main Theme - YouTube and Roy Hamilton - You Can Have Her (Mafia II Soundtrack) - YouTube I would actually say that Mafia 2 has one of the best licensed soundtracks out there.

Seconded, I loved Megatron's and Cyclonus's themes and the Alaska stage theme.

    Halo. In general.
    The Gears of War trilogy.

All of these other epic bits of music escape me.

Mario normally has something cool, epic, and at the same time cute.
Oh, Rayman: Origins had something amazing.

Oh, and while this is more a compilation of Nintendo music; Smash Bros: Brawl.

I think everyone kinda expects those games to have good music, it's not much of a surprise.

Original Quake. The music was done by Nine Inch Nails, so that's a winner in my book.

Pacman World 2: Some of my favorite songs come from this game.

Crash Twinsanity: It's soundtrack was silly, but it's ENTIRE soundtrack is done in acapella.

This is one of the greatest soundtracks, but by that point I wouldn't say it was surprising for the series.

Donkey Kong Country and particularly DKC2 both had great music. As did the original Starfox. Also, the first Panzer Dragoon on the Saturn had some great orchestrated music. I don't know why some of these series got worse, maybe they just stopped caring about the music?

More recently Darksiders 2 had a pretty good soundtrack. I was expecting more hair metal, but overall it's pretty diverse and mood setting.

    Madworld and Max Anarchy/Anarchy Reigns.
For games who's soundtrack is primarily rap, almost all of the songs are pretty damn catchy.

I think it's a given most of Nintendo's own series have fantastic soundtracks.

Reflux the Knaaren's theme from Rayman 3 is one of my favorites, and the whole Western/Latin-American-inspired Rayman Origins track is awesome.
Second this. IIRC, Spiralmouth (the group that did the music) does a lot of post-production stuff to their vocals, but it's still amazing that the "guitar riffs" here:
Crash Twinsanity OST - Rooftop Rampage - YouTube
    are NOT actually guitar riffs.
