This guy looks pretty sweet. I'm going to pick one up, but before I buy one at the local Toys R Us I wanted to find out more info on the different versions.

How many repaints are there and what are they?
Is the Japanese version different? If so how?

    Thanks.

There isn't a Japanese version of the toy Hasbro called 'Galaxy Force Optimus Prime'

That mold was used twice in Japan.

The standard Japanese version is different from the (first) Hasbro version in that:

1)The ladders have white paint on the sides.

2)The rear wheels have bronze paint on them.

3)The Key has gold paint on the edges.

4)The small lights on the roof are painted yellow

    5) The center of the kneecaps are painted silver.

There's also the Sonic Convoy set from TRU Japan. Parts of the toy are translucent red, but IIRC, paint details are much the same.

I've got the tranluscent one from japan, and the regular one from cybertron, and I honestly don't see any paint ap differences in mine except that the hip guns are painted more red on the japanese version..

When I say Japanese version, I'm refering to GC-01, Galaxy Force Convoy.
Sounds like you also refering to GC-01?

After comparing pictures closely, I can see the details you mentioned. So would it be correct to say that the Japanese GC-01 has slightly more detailed paint applications?

    What about other Hasbro versions?
I thought there was at least one other Hasbro version.

I missed that one ; on the GF version most of the length of the top of the cannons beside the knees are painted red, on the Cyb version that section is bare.

    Yes.

I forgot to mention, the Cybertron version is slightly retooled - to allow the wings to detatch/reattatch more easily.

So far, there's two. 'Optimus Prime' and 'Galaxy Force Optimus Prime'

For the sake of clarity However, i should probably mention the third Optimus Prime in Cybertron which has a truck mode, but is a deluxe class toy repainted from Armada.

Based on the popularity of the toy, there's a good chance Hasbro will repaint it again down the line, for Cybertron however the mold has been used twice.

EDIT: Never mind, I see you corrected your pics, Golgo. Still, you might want to keep what I originally posted in mind.

I corrected my post with the pics. Do I have right now?

I like the Japanese GC-01 the best in terms of the paint apps.

On the retooling with the wings, is it something important that would make the Cybertron version better? Or is it not really needed?

This is exactly why I started this thread. I knew if bought the one at Target last night (Cybertron Optimus Prime), I would later find out that there another version that I want more.

It doesn't have to be a nightmare, I'm asking a pretty simple question, which is what versions are there of this mold. I obviously don't know which is which, that's why I'm asking before I get suckered by the usual marketing repaint tricks.

Hasbro doesn't even have Cybertron Optimus Prime listed on their website.

And for what it's worth... someone with kitbashing/customizing skills far exceeding my own could make an "ultimate" Prime by combining parts from the two US releases. The blue parts from the original and the burgundy red of the second release would be gorgeous.
