G2 was a Hasbro attempt to see if Transformers would still be viable as a line. While it worked on some level, it wasn't until Classics that we would see the G1 characters again
Back on topic. I noticed while searching for G2 on ebay, that so far all I see for Dinobots are the following three. Blue Grimlock Green Snarl Red Slag Were the other two ever redone? Like Swoop and Sludge?
No. They were planned to be, but no, along with a third Grimlock release that was to be coloured yellow-orange with turquoise striping and chest. Sludge was to be dark orange with a blue chest. Swoop was to have green wings, launchers, dino-feet, head-crest and lower beak, a silver chest, and a blue head, arms, and robot legs. There was also a red Snarl and Green Slag, as well as variants of all three in their 1985 gray.
Swoop and Sludge don't have G2 variants. I think it has to do with toy saftey standards by that time. Anyways, G2 was what my parents got me. During that time I got really into TFs and G1 stuff was nowhere to be found. Finally Hasbro released G2 and my parents rejoiced. I like G2. I still need to fill some gaps in my collection now that I think about it. The one thing that would make me happy is if the Universe Silverbolt and Onslaught figures would get redone in wacky G2 colors. I would be a happy boy when those are announced.
The new molds released in G2 were pretty great IMO. Dreakwing/ Smokscreen, the Laser Rods and Cyber Jets still hold up fairly well today (except for poor GPS-prone Electro ). Not as complex as, say, the Movie toys but still good in their own right.
G2 had some great points, like the introduction of ball joints with so many figures. I'm still a big fan of Laser Prime and the Cyberjets, even compared to modern figures.
Here is some of the artwork that was made for the unreleased G2 Sludge and Swoop: For the record, I love my G2s!
Ummm.... if you don't want the answer to sell more toys, then what kind of 'point' are you talking about? Besides selling toys, what were the 'points' of other Transformer lines? It lasted for a few years, so it had some popularity. Experimentation in pigments gone bad? "Bad" is in the eye of the beholder, but also experimentation in pigments? It was the early/mid-nineties... it was the style at the time.
Fine fine fine, Three Words CYBERJETS and LASER PRIME /Thread. Although I did dig the bellow smashing goodness of Hero Megs and Prime. (and Laser Prime)
well, onslaught did get a botcon exclusive repaint as clench (good thing too because the euro exclusives are almost impossible to get over here), and silverbolt was repainted into the cyberjet skyjack's colors.
Seriously. It's like, "What was the point of importing Diaclone for an American market, other than to sell toys?"
In the comic, a group of transformers that had left Cybertron years before unlocked the long turned-off ability to asexually reproduce, creating second-generation transformers. "Generation 2". Transformers fans need to read more. Seriously.
There was a cartoon, but it was a re-dress of the original cartoon. There was a storyline in the form of the toy bios and a comic book.
