Okay, what was the point of G2? I mean other than the normal answer of to sell more toys?
If I remember correctly, it was not as popular as G1 and it seemed to have died down. At least, I had no interest in them. I thought their repaints were butt-ugly.
There was no cartoon for G2, there was no story line for G2 that I know of. So what was the point of it?

One could call E-Hobby's repaints another generation for that matter.

But seriously, did G2 have any popularity at all? Or was it an experimentation in pigments gone bad?

I think it was a decent attempt to bring Transformers back onto toy shelves and try a slightly new spin on the franchise (like the comic says, "NOT YOUR FATHER'S AUTOBOT!"). I personally dig the blatant neon redecos, a sign of the Nike Pump era 1990s. That and like a lot of other kids I knew, I liked having new toys to fill the hole that my long-since broken Snarl and Jazz left behind. That and we got Laser Optimus Prime, who is awesome.

    And GoBot Prime.

    Yeah, I said it.

I remember Generation 2 did have a fiction in Marvel/Furman's comic series... though aside from featuring a green tank Megatron, I don't remember it having much else to do with the toy line. It was basically just picking up the G1 series again.

I think the Japanese G2 releases had a fiction, told mainly through minicomics.

But in the West... yeah, there wasn't much to G2. A few new toys, lots of ugly repaints. Maybe I was getting too old to appreciate it when it came out... or maybe it just wasn't a very attractive line. I was impressed with Megatron being a tank, and with the G2 Laser Prime mold. That's about it.

I loved G2. Chance to get G1 toys that I missed out on, got a big-ass tank megatron, and lots of other cool stuff like the cyberjets, laser rods, and Dreadwing.

    Comic.

Nike Pump? You mean Reebok? :p

The sole purpose of G2 was to blind as many people as possible. :D

While the repaints in their crazy colors were crazy, most of the new molds are still awesome.

Pretty much. It was an attempt to revive the line, rather than let it die. Did they bungle it a bit by not producing new cartoons as originally planned? Probably. The culture had changed somewhat since G1 started, and they tried to gear the toys and the comic to what was supposed to be popular with kids at the time.

And to be fair, it did pretty well, lasting at least three years before it was dropped and Beast Wars was started. Maybe not the success they hoped for, but certainly not a failure.

Hey, my vision wouldn't be 20/20 if I stayed Stateside and experienced G2. :p

You're just sore because you don't have to wear glasses like us cool kids.

And because your Jazz doesn't have beats so phat that he has quarter note decals on him. ADMIT IT.

Hasbro (INC) pulled the plug on TFs after 1990, and fell back on G.I.Joe.

Thing is, G.I.Joe was starting to list a little, and they saw TFs were still moving overseas.

As a stand alone line, G2 was a mixed bag. In the greater scheme of things, it got Transformers back into toy stores after being absent for a year or two, gave Hasbro some momentum to re-imagine the brand...and made the ball joint more ubiquitous.

In itself... not the greatest line of toys in the Brand's history, but still a significant line.

I think the only G2 I'd be inclined to purchase would be the Dinobots as they'd be like having E-Hobby repaints of them. I kind of like the blue Grimlock.

By that time, I was no longer playing with transformers. Never had any G2. Or Beast Wars.

By age 12, all my toys Transformers, GI Joe's and Thundercats, everything was either trashed or went to goodwill.

Rediscovered TF when Animated came out. Then I had to track down all the awesome CHUG stuff.

I love the G2 Botcon Breakdown though. But mostly for the head sculpt!! I wish all classics could have such cool retro looking G1 head sculpts.

And liking the G2 Jazz over the original red, white and blue striped Jazz is UN-AMERICAN!

The Laser Rod/Illuminators are pretty good.

If you can find ones that still work.... and an Electro that doesn't crumble to dust soon as you look at it crooked.

I prefer "geek chic," dingus. As does G2.

And now I'm gonna draw G2 Jazz waving a bigass American flag just to spite you.
