I'm looking to purchase an original G2 Laser Prime, and I was wondering if anyone could tell/show me what the major differences are between the original and reissue packaging. I would also appreciate any details about the Japanese version(s) out there as well...

    Thanks in advance.

The Japanese re-issue has a chromed trailer. That's the one that I picked up a couple years ago.

The Takara reissue also gave Prime a chrome chest, changed the chest stickers, and gave it some different paint apps. Like the middle section of the shoulder towers are painted dark gray, where as the original didn't have that part painted.

Is there a big difference between the prices?

Actually, I think the original Japanese release of G2 Prime was in a similar styled package, like their reissue. From the Japanese G2 packages I recall, they were not identical to the Hasbro ones.

    Erm...

"Very different" because one is Hasbro release while the other one is Takara? :p

    Correct. :)

He asked about original and reissue packaging, then about Japanese versions. That being the case, I figured it was safe to assume by "original" he meant the Hasbro original, and by Japanese version, he meant packaging. My mistake.

I was not aware that it was only reissued in Japan.
This clears things up, thanks guys.

The original Japanese run can be distinguished from the reissue by the chest area, which is visible as both Japanese releases had the cab in robot mode. The reissue has chrome on the chest, and different window details showing a Matrix. The original lacks the chrome and has the "Optimus Prime" window stickers.

Right now I have the Japanese reissue and the original Japanese G2 version (which I'm planning on selling). The original G2 one is identical to the US version, save for the box. The reissue, as mentioned, has a new chest sticker and chrome on the fake windows in bot mode, as well as on the trailer. In general, it's a great figure, I just wish the legs would click in a little better.
