He looks legit, could he be a mail away variant?

I'm not aware of that being a variant. Typically the rub symbol for wheeljack is on one of the rear spoilers.

However the KO wheeljack doesn't come with many stickers applied (rub symbol being one of them) so it's possible this is a KO:

Atypically white, near perfect paint. Stickers in the wrong places. Wings that appear a little too transparent. My guess is they opened a KO to more easily sell it as original.

G1's often have stickers in funny places due to the kids putting them on, but those wings do seem a little clear - could be repros? We would need better pics, but it looks much tighter and well made compared to the ko in the link above.

I just got him in the mail today, It's not as clean as described, here are pictures. What do you guys think? It feels pretty tight and solid.

It certainly looks weathered. It's not easy to make brand new stickers look that old. The clear ones just get a certain 'patina' to them. Maybe the rub sign was carefully moved 25 years ago.

Not sure if it means anything, but the screws on the underside were definitely taken out at some point. They are stripped almost to the point where they may not be removable.

Yea, he looks legit to me. I got an vintage Wheeljack recently and he looks almost as nice as yours, very similar in build quality. There are pics on my toy blog and flicker if you want to compare. As far as the misplaced rub sign, probably a factory mistake, or someone just moved it. Heck people are getting MP Rodimus with the wrong (reversed) side pipes on one arm, these toys are not all perfect.

A good looking Wheeljack man, enjoy it!

My KO Wheeljack will not stand on his own the KO was missing something that kept him upright.

With those pictures, I'd say you have a legit version. There's too much age on the figure. Wasn't Wheeljack one of the figures rereleased in the UK in the classics gold box? Perhaps that explains the rub signs change in location?

Just a thought, but if the KO's anything like the original, he won't stay upright till you pull the feet apart; that locks them in the perpendicular position.

That sounds entirely feasible, I think he was released as a gold box Classic. I've got the original, so I never saw that version close-up, but it certainly seems plausible that it could have had the rubsign applied elsewhere.

Someone moved the RUB symbol from its original location on the spoiler or from a different figure altogether. Congrats on Wheeljack, one of my favs.

If I remember correctly my Wheeljack was the mail away version and I do believe that his rub sign was in the same location.

What's weird are the stickers on this Wheeljack. It looks like someone applied nearly two entire sheets worth to him at random.

This could easily be a "Frankenstein" version where someone either got the KO version or some reprolables and went to town on the original
