Hey guys, this question is for you tf fans who have been fans since the 80's.
How much did G1 Tf toys cost back in the days. I heard the cars like sideswipe, prowl, ect. costed 10 bucks. I am just curious to how much the others costed....
    thanks!

i was born in 82 so my parents were the ones who shelled out the dough, but you'd probably have to factor in inflation to truly appreciate the price difference. anybody with the prices can use this online calculator to figure it out: CPI Inflation Calculator

To my recollection, living in Virginia at the time, "Deluxes" like Ironhide, Sideswipe, etc...were about $7.99-9.99 depending on where you shopped. Smaller guys like the minibots and Stunticons were $3.99. Omega Supreme was $50, which to a kid was an astronomical ammount of money, I don't remember exactly, but Prime and Megatron were around $30, as I would always bug my mom for Megatron and she told me it was too much money (but later got it for my Bday) Hope that helped.

I paid £37 for Scorponok in 1987, still have the Beatties price sticker on the box. My brother and I sold plants out the front of our house to raise money to buy it. Epic toy. Still have all the parts and it is in great condition.

I still find it amusing to consider how "inflation proof" transformers got after the "plastic transition" in 1986. It really wasn't until 2009 that we really got our first major price increase, brandwide, since the introduction of standardized pricepoints in 1996.

In 1985, $10 could get you:
ONE Transformers Autobot Car (Sideswipe, Prowl, etc)/Combiner Torso or
    THREE Minibots or
    TWO Combiner limbs or
THREE GI joe single figures (AVG. retail $2.99-3.49) or
Up to THREE GI Joe small vehicles (Armadillo, Ferret, etc) or
ONE midsize GI Joe vehicle (HISS tank, Slugger, SHARC, etc) or
2 Masters of the Universe figures

In 1998, $10 could get you:
    ONE Transformers deluxe or
    TWO Transformers basics or
TWO "standard" action figures (4-5") or
ONE "large" action figures (6-12") or
    ONE small GI Joe vehicle

In 2011, $10 can get you:
ONE Transformers deluxe figure (IF on sale, YMMV) or
ONE Transformers scout (AVG retail $7.99) or
    TWO TRansformers Legion figures
ONE 3.75 Action figure (avg. retail $6.99 to 8.99 depending on brand/franchise)

    Boy, have times changed.

I would say $10 in 1985 is closer to $25-$30 today, well atleast here in Vancouver Canada, I know in the states things are still relatively cheap compared to Canada so maybe that conversion doesn't make sense.

Sunstreaker actually isn't a good example of that. Reason being that he's one of the few G1's whose molds have been lost, so no more re-issues of the figure can be made. That makes the existing figures all that more valuable depending on the condition, ESPECIALLY if they're sealed. A MISB G1 Sunstreaker certainly could get more than $200.

I remembered G1 Optimus Prime was HALF the price of the leader class , and the dinobots goes for HALF the price of deluxe sized figure in 2011 a pop.

The only one I vividly remember was Soundwave, at $30. This was in Canada, though - back then the exchange rate was abhorrent! Today's it overs between just below or just over par with the US dollar, which is nice.

I remember that, because I was mainly a GI Joe and Star Wars collector as a kid, and had only a few TFs, but this was the NUMBER ONE Transformer I always, always wanted.
