I know it's Frank Welker that played Soundwave, but how did he/they as the writers managed to make it sound like a robot talking?

They had magic in 1984? Mind. Blown.

They made it seem like the robot was talking by playing a voice clip while the video animation showed a robot's face (sometimes the mouthplate moved too). This combination of recorded audio and animated video leads to the illusion that the drawn robot characters can in fact speak.

    :D

    Sorry, I just had to.

Welker is just that fucking good.

No but seriously, he's doing Dr. Claw's voice, and they ran it through a vocoder, just like the Cylons on Battlestar Galactica. There's a couple slipups in the cartoon where they forget to vocode, check out those.

Actually, pretty much every Transformer in the first season or two had artificial voice modulation/alteration of one kind or another, didn't they?

I like the magic answer because that's really what it was, from a nostalgia standpoint.

It's easily the most identifiable aspect of Soundwave. It's a shame they didn't use the same effects in Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon. Every time Soundwave speaks in those movies, all I hear is Dr. Claw.

I love this thread. One may say it was even 'superior'.

It's obvious, they just made Frank Welker speak his lines into a pedestal fan......

Just like how i'd sing the theme song into the pedestal fan in my bedroom :D

Yeah. Why they left that out is beyond me.

They were putting less artifical modulation into the Decepticons in that movie for some reason, and I guess they figured why not Soundwave as well. I didn't hate it, but I agree it lacked that certain je ne sais quoi of vocoded-soundwave.

I can sort of understand going out of your way to hire someone for voicework and then not wanting to make them sound like something coming out of a computer, I guess.

They asked the real Soundwave to come in and voice himself.

Agreed, 100%... And I can totally understand that with say, Hugo Weaving and Megatron. In TF07 you really couldn't tell. SOME of the man's inflection came through, but not much. But if you go out of your way to hire Frank Welker to do Soundwave, shouldn't it sound like Soundwave?

The voice alteration in the movies is really subtle, but upon close examination, it sounds like their vocal cords are scraping gears.

Took me three movies to realize Optimus's voice was altered.
