maybe it's just me, but it seems like all g1 plastics have the same smell.(It's more obvious when the toy is warm, the smell is pretty unique too)

Is it just me? I wonder if we can use this to tell if a toy is KO or not.

Strangely enough, I know exactly what you are talking about. I keep my transformers in plastic containers with drawers and I have one drawer for only G1's. Whenever I open it, the smell just sort of lingers near the bin. It's not a particularly strong smell, but it's distinct enough for me to recognize it.

The thing is that sometimes my hands smell like that too, but only when I transform the ones with a lot of white plastic.

Smell? what smell? someone farted? just kidding there folks.

But seriously all new toys regardless if it's G1 or not, do have a distinct odour when it's just taken out of the box. maybe some chemical residue from the manufacturing process done in da factory.

It's the smell of the die-cast metal, combined with the rubber on many of the tires.

The most beautiful smell ever. But seriously 84-85 G1 raw materials (plastic, diecast, rubber, vac metallized decos) were far superior to anything today.

There is another possibility that you might consider. When things degrade, they often put off odors. In other words, it's possible that your G1 collection is in trouble. It's not a dire emergency - they won't dissolve into nothingness tomorrow - but you may want to consider how they are stored and displayed. Keep the temperature and humidity moderate (as best you can). If your collection is in an enclosed space, consider adding something that will absorb moisture and odors, like some baking soda.

Wow. I never thought of that. Right now all of my collection is in public storage. I have to go tomorrow and check them out. The only thing that (I know of) smells is my G1 Omega Supreme box. I love that smell.

Nope it's the plastic in the toy outgassing. It's not residue because the plastic itself absorbed the stuff and it's now leeching out.

Flash fact: The additives they put into PVC to make it soft and more flexible are really toxic. In fact one (DEHP) is sooo toxic that the European commission banned it's use in PVC. PVC being the most common type of plastic, all your TF's are made out of it. So when you crack open a new Tf don't smell it too much, you might do yourself long term harm.

DEHP is sufficiently safe to be used in medical devices today. It is only dangerous to newborns and pregnant women, not adults.

This is a rather moot point to begin with, as Transformers are made from ABS, not PVC.

There always seems to be a fishy smell lingering in the air after I've got 'intimate' with Wheelie.

I only have one reissue(and it's packed) so I don't remember if the smell is different. It's definitely a different smell comparing to classic line though. G2 toys have a similar smell. And it's not the diecast part either, just the plastic part, because accessories have the same smell.

I can't really describe the smell, but it's definitely not something unpleasant. Most of my toys are loose, and each time I get a new toy, I play around with it for a few days to check if there're any defects, that's how I found out about this.
