All this does is prove to me that the G1 designs would have worked.

It's cool and all, but I still think G1 TFs look silly in the real world.

Bleh, looks like an animated toy. Especialy close-up, G1 designs would have never worked.

it's... okay. verysharp, but it still makes me think 'cosplayer'.

or maybe it's just that we've been hauling our cosplayers to every event/showing we've attended this month? :D

Thanks for the GIF of the clip, DC.

I dunno... as silly as some of the TF's could have looked directly translated from their G1 versions to movie versions, I really do think that ILM could have made it work with a few design upgrades here & transformation tweaks there. And no, I'm not saying that is what they should have done. Just saying it probably could have been done.

I mean, I look at the current movie toys. They're the 'dumbed down' version of these mega complex movie designs, and basically amount to being little blocks that also have next to no articulation that the original G1 toys had. But they work on screen. I think the same could be said - for the most part - if they reverse designed the G1/Alternator versions of many characters so that they looked more complex on screen with many more articulation points, some gears showing here & there, etc. Whatever it takes to make them look believable.

I'm not saying that characters like Ironhide or Bumblebee should have remained seriously out of date car models - they absolutely did need to be updated - but characters like Starscream, Prime, and a tank mode Megatron, for example, could have stayed much more similar to their original designs than most people think or want to believe since the same logic applies to them as it does to the current movie designs - that SO much more can be done in terms of detail & engineering thanks to the size of them in a 'real life' environment and tricky enough CGI to show how many moving parts there really are on these guys.

I do firmly believe that many people are convinced that G1-esque designs could never work because that's what Michael Bay and fandom spin doctors told them. Personal opinions being turned into supposed fact and all that. And really, it's no secret anymore that these current movie designs are the only ones that could have worked. It's been confirmed by ILM, a few of the actors and Bay himself that these designs are basically "his vision" and are not in fact the only proven, tested & tried versions that look real.

I'm not bitching about it one way or the other - just playing Devil's Advocate for sake of discussion :)

The plane looks fine, but the transformation and the finished product are so boring compared to what Bay has blessed us with.

    >_> Seriously.
