If the Chinese have taught us anything, it's that they don't need no stinking original molds to copy something. Hell, I don't even think they need the original figures sometimes.

Point being, if they wanted to, Hasbro could rerelease anything.

Knockoffs are generally questionable in quality. Hasbro would need to spend extra money to make a limited release toy...so, veey improbable.

Forgive me if it has been mentioned, but I saw a pre-order for Skylynx and PMOP up at BBTS.

Maybe in your experience but trust me, a reverse engineered figure can be every bit as good as the original.

Are there good examples of reverse engineered G1 figures?

The G1 knock offs are surprisingly high quality, especially when they're still "new" runs. The G1 prime ones out now are pretty crappy but the KOs I have of Sunstreaker, Mirage, and the dinobots are all just as good as the originals in build quality and materials. Stickers are hit or miss though.

Also I don't think any KO company has ever reverse engineered a mold from a G1 toy. They are just using the original molds (or copies of them). Unless you're talking about the tiny combiners from dollar general. But the ones that come in "g1" packaging are all pretty top notch.

If you google it the first pics that will appear are actual comparisons.

I got a set of KO Stuntincons from back in the day with funky colouration and the fact that it survived my hands in one piece tells all that needs to be told.

So did a Roadfire I have.

IDK for others but the G1 Prime KO I have aside the fact that the cab it doesnt roll that good, has no other issues.

If the recent KOs are reversed engineered, I bought all the ones not reissued since 2000 and I'd say 75% are of great quality. Main sucky ones are some of the Dinobots and Mirage, Wheeljack, and Weirdwolf. I dunno, I love Takara and all, but they've had some issues too so it's hard to say personally to say official automatically makes it better quality.

Scorponok is awesome, the red faced Slag is awesome. I dunno who they reversed engineered the blue chested Swoop, but other than the cannons fitting in the wings, he's amazing. Spinning wheels on the knees/landing gears and sharp beak.

Exactly my point. The high quality KOs from G1 aren't genuine knockoffs as much as they are most likely unauthorized factory runs. The only ones that were probably reverse engineered were the Discount Store sets and I'd be loathe to call them high quality. The cost to do the reverse engineering obviously went into the tooling themselves as opposed to the plastics and parts molds. For Hasbro to do it on a higher quality scale...I'm just not certain collectors are ready to take on the price burden.

I had one G1 prime KO about 5 years ago that was pretty perfect, but the hands fit a little loose. I gave it to someone a while back. Last year I bought another: he doesn't roll right, hands fall right out, the trailer is warped, and his metal chest part doesn't sit right against the plastic part of the chest. I'd guess its mold degradation? Or maybe they make so many they're just not bothering with good QC? who knows.

Probably the last one. It would surprise me if they even make anything more than a cursory check.

Agree on this. I had the KO Scourge, Devastaror and Octane. Dude. They looked like they came right from the 80's.

They are Knockoffs and nothing else. They are made from reverse engeniring a G1 toy. Takara did this themself if I remember correctly for Soundwave.

I have a KO Bruticus in horrible colors that still have tight joints. The plastic does feel......not cheap but less-than compared to G1, but it still holds a great shelf presence. I personally have had it with seeing all of the cars redone over and over. I would much rather see figures like Whirl, Roadbuster, Octane, and some of the bigger bases like Scorponok.

The first Soundwave reissue toy was using the SoundBlaster mold, which had the door modifications. The only thing they would have reverse engineered there would be the door to go back to the single cassette carriage.

Oh definitely. Just want folks to know he's available if they're planning to reboot their G1 reissue collections.
