I know the Prime has been covered 100X in the past, but here's a more formal guide to spotting the reproduction.

Also note, there's another version of the repro'ed Prime running around. It's been noted by Might Gaine that adjustments have been made. Read the post here.

This guide still applies to all remakes, so just look for more than 1 clue, instead of the dead giveaway.

    Before I start ...
All participation is welcomed. If I missed anything please let me know. These differences are ones I found just by combing over the pictures.

Keep all ethical "knockoff" discussion out of this thread. This is for educational purposes only. NO DEBATES PLEASE.

I usually rank these in order of importance. Not this time. Here are 11 differences, take them as you wish.

There are some color differences, but those have to be ignored. Many variables with originals (fading, picture lighting, etc) make color matching against repro's inconclusive.

Again, the purpose to this is to educate eBayers. There are AWFUL sellers out there who claim these pieces as being real.

When on eBay, look at the seller's feedback and other items for sale. Chances are, they've sold many of these already. That will be the best indicator of "original" or "reproduction". You gotta use your head before using this guide.

    1. additional grey boreder
    [IMG]
On the original, Prime's trailer touched the grid. No additional grey boreder exists.

    2. The positioning of "Formers"
Take a look and note the positioning. It's shifted on the reproduction.

    3. Off-center text
    [IMG]
The reproduction's text isn't quite lined up. It's shifted to the left and actually breaks a grid line.

    4. Missing stickers
    [IMG]
A Hasbro issued Prime will have 2 stickers on it. No more, no less.

    5. Amateur sticker application
    [IMG]
When the repro'ed stickers are applied to a bare cab, this often happens.

    6. . should be :
Not much to mention here. A minor typo does exist.

    7. Fade to black point
    [IMG]
The fade to black point starts much lower on the reproduction.

    8. High-®
    [IMG]
The ® goes sky high on the reproduction. On top of it, the original has a "TM". I'm not sure if this is across the board for all original issue Primes.

    9. Factory flap crease
    [IMG]
A factory made flap crease will be present.

    10. Chopped Ravages
    [IMG]
You'll see that both kitties are chopped off.

    11. Extra contents
    [IMG]
The contents marked with a "!" are not standard issue stickers. These were applied at the factory, not home.

for 11, spencer said that the thing with the hose is glued together, unlike the original, which we all know was in three pieces.

Your guides are great. Can you create a website for them? That way they could be picked up by Google et al.

i hope you pay less than me. i got suckered for $99 bucks. most cheaper ko reissues you could snag for 40 or 50. but the nice thing is that hasbro just released the official 25th prime which i did pickup for 75 with the comic n dvd.

This thread saved me $80. I bid on an auction fom the UK for what looked to be a legit Prime and won it for virtually nothing. I got suspicious though about the seller and did more research before paying. All the little things that were mentioned above were present, but none of the glaring mistakes like missing stickers or anything. Thanks for the very detailed guide, otherwise I would be out $80 and stuck w/ a fake Prime.

Optimus Prime KO - my experience

I wished I saw this guide earlier coz I was a victim of Prime KO!!
Ok just to share the one I got recently, it appears that the Prime I had had improved - the decals were correctly placed this time, the grey area on he box had been reduced to mirror the original. They also included a red transparent decoder. Mine came missing the instruction sheet. However the back picture of the box still have the ravage chop off! So thats the giveaway that this is a KO!

KOs waste alot of my browsing time on ebay.

This is a good thread. Never noticed all these differences. I always went with the glow from his feet on box. It goes out further on the original and only 2 squares on the KO.

There is someone selling a KO for $1,495.00 on ebay claiming its an never played with 1984. Would hope no one would spend that much without checking first.

Transformers G1 Optimus Prime MIB1984 NEVER PLAYED WITH on eBay (end time 25-Dec-10 19:27:21 GMT)

I'm tempted to click Buy, then no pay as it is a KO, just so can leave feedback removing his 100% good feedback rating on there! muahaha.

I've got a G1 Mib Optimus. The only thing that differs it from the guide is that it has an (r) above Transformers instead of the TM. Although, it is tight (like the original), not raised like the repro one. It also still has part of the old toys r us price tag on it so I'm certain it's original

^ I think the Pre-rub version which was all Transformer boxes with TM haven't been KO'd yet. I THINK. So, if you find a seller with the box having TM, you are presumably safe. I can't remember though, I haven't looked for G1 figures that were KO'd for a while now. I'm sure someone else can correct me if I'm wrong :S
