To me he has always been a "white freightliner" semi truck, and if you pay attention to details even the toy has the characteristic "freightliner" tag on top of the grill, however I have seen many fans and even websites state he is a Mac semi truck, what do you think he really is?

I don't quite understand why you're saying a white freightliner, since G1 Prime was red.

    Indeed. How very odd.

    Ultra Magnus = White cab

    Optimus Prime = Red cab.

I can't believe I'm actually having to spell this out...

I wondered about the phrasing myself, so I checked Wikipedia.

"Lacking distribution capability, and seeking higher volume to reduce production costs, In 1951, Consolidated Freightways [makers of Freightliner trucks] entered into an agreement to sell their trucks through the White Motor Company, of Cleveland, OH, and their dealer network in the US and Canada. This relationship endured for the next quarter century, and the co-branded "White Freightliner" cab-over-engine models became a familiar sight on the highways across the continent."

So, just an old brand name that may or may not have applied to the original truck in question. As far as the actual question, I'm pretty sure that "Mack truck" is just a genericization of that brand referring to any semi truck. Enough nerd-hours have been spent cataloging the alt-modes of G1 that I would tend to trust the TFWiki: "The toy transforms into a late 1970s red Freightliner FL86 Cab-over-Engine triple-axle semi trailer truck..."

^thanks for the research. However, whether I was 6 or whether I was 32, I just always thought he was a "red truck" and that was good enough.

That's basically it. Just like any SUV might be called a "Jeep", even though that is a specific brand.

    G1 is a mid 70s Volvo cab-over. Bay is a 1978 Fl86 Freightliner.

Yes my bad,for all the above confusion, "White" is a brand and not the color of the truck, made by white motor company and MACK is NOT a generalization, is actually a truck brand as well.

Actually this is a white freightliner:

Excuse me for my ignorance, but were both or either of these trucks even available to the Japanese market in the early '80's?

I have to say though, you're 100% right, OP, White Freightliners look just like Optimus. Mack trucks don't even look all that close, to be honest.

I have been an autoglass installer for 15 specializing in semi trucks and large glass. G1 was a Volvo Cab-Over circa 1976 to 1981. Bay Prime is a 1977 to 1980 Freightliner FL86.

I would love to debate this but feel as though constant daily exposure to trucks renders me correct by distinction of licensed professional experience.

Well sorry for disagreeing with You, and I do not mean to disrespect your professional license experience, but here is another website that proves what i believe. At least looks just like prime.

    GardenTrucking: 79' COE Freightliner

Now one thing is for sure, and, maybe they mixed detail from both type of trucks, VOLVO and freightliner because I found a picture of a KENWORTH that also looks very much like prime

    http://www.autotrader.ca/a/KENWORTH.../5_9327412_20070422175248437/?ms=heavy_trucks

    http://timstrucks.site.aplus.net/timbluestripekwfront.jpg

Found more kenworth trucks, but even though close the grill is different:

    http://timstrucks.site.aplus.net/timkw.htm

Now I have found NO pictures of VOLVO trucks that look like prime.

here is more trucks, Kenworth and peterbilt are close but Freightliner is dead on, but again no volvos:

I think people say mac truck for a semi the same way they say Xerox when they mean photocopy, or kleenex when they mean tissue. It's a case of one brand becoming a term for an entire industry.

I can see why people would think the volvo or peterbilt's might be Prime, but the front grill seems... different compared to how it should, whereas the Freightliner is dead-on to the original toy.

It could be that other brands have been used as reference material for the comic and animated appearances though.

yes...did your google skills finally fail on you?

Japan has always had a love of sports car. A love shared worldwide. Sports cars serve a purpose for thrill.

    Semis purpose are work.

    Terrible analogy.
