I have a few questions for G1 only collectors and I'm hoping a few of you will answer, G1 collectors only not: "Sometimes I go for G1..."

    1. Do you collect Universe and Classics?

    2. Do you consider Takara's figures as genuine G1?

    3. Even though you say G1 only, does that also mean you collect G2, and Beast series?

    4. How often are you tempted to break your law?

    5. Is it an obligation or is it just you think it's the only good series?

    6. How often do you break your law?

    7. Do you think any other figures are good but still not get them?

    8. Do you ever want a figure other than G1 but feel it's not right to get it?

    9. Do you buy the custom attachments for some of these figures, such as City Commander or accuracy enhancing stickers?

    10. Which do you prefer Hasbro or Takara?

Please help myself and others have a greater understanding of this.

I am stuck on the Original series/G1, nothing else comes close! You can tell Animated to go to HELL!

Why are you asking these questions? Are you considering about just collecting G1?

Quick answers to you questions, I do what makes me happy. I don't get all anal like some collectors. I do takara reissues and do get classics.

Ok, I'm not ONLY G1, but I'd consider it the primary focus of TF collecting with everything else as a derivative, so...

While I used to collect other Transformers lines, my main focus has always been G1. I've stopped collecting all together but only line to bring me back is G1.

    1. I did, I've lost my enthusiasm for Universe 2.0 now though.

    2. Takara reissues you mean? They're as valid as the early 90s Euro reissues.

    3. No. Even though I like some of the toys from those eras, I have no emotional connection with those like I do with G1, because I was busy with teenage stuff at the time.

    4. I don't have a law, I just get what I've got enthusiasm for, mainly due to budgetary constraints. Also specialising on one particular era helps me have a more focused collection.

    5. I really don't regard G1 as the "be all and end all".

    6. I don't have a law, I get what I like.

    7. Frequently. For example, I passed on plenty of Animated that I liked.

    8. No. I don't pass on figures for because of some rigid unwritten rule.

    1. Do you collect Universe and Classics?

I buy some, I do not consider myself to collect. For ex. I purchased legends bumblebee and beachcomber, but not legends megatron or hound. I bought universe hound, henkeis starscream, prime, and megatron, universe cyclonus and galvatron, skipped out on all the ultras. Basically, I buy what I feel is "true" to the original concept, or what the original concept "should have been". So universe blaster does not qualify, for example.

I do collect the Masterpiece series.

    2. Do you consider Takara's figures as genuine G1?

Ambiguous, as G1 figures were produced/designed by both Hasbro and Takara. If you mean the encores, reissues, commemoratives and all the multiple releases etc. from Takara, I do not deem them to be "genuine G1"...just reissues of a previous figure, which is a chronic practice amongst all major Japanese toy companies, definitely not exclusive to Takara alone.

    3. Even though you say G1 only, does that also mean you collect G2, and Beast series?

No, I don't branch into the different lines. Beast wars are fundamentally different as toys, so for me personally the temptation to collect them is very minimal.

    4. How often are you tempted to break your law?
    None ever so far

    5. Is it an obligation or is it just you think it's the only good series?
I don't consider it an obligation, and I don't consider it the only good series. I consider it the only good series for me as a collector. Personally, when it comes to Transformers I want things I can share with other people. A couple of some old friends from college came by one day and they were pretty glad to see the likes of Devastator, Superion, Omega Supreme, the Dinobots, etc. etc. I like collecting Transformers in the sense that they are "iconic" and I can share experiences with other people, and that they recognize the characters, and if they dont recognize the characters, they know where they come from.

Conversely, there is obviously no comparison in the engineering between the modern lines and G1's 25 year outdated tech...but I can't really say I want to have a display case full of energon or RID figures...there's no "connect" between those figures and myself.

It's a bit complicated to articulate but basically, when my friends come over, or my parents see what I've got...they don't view them as just "toys" but they view them as something that was once a great concept and former cultural icon (still is), and as such should be kept. The fact that they comprehend that when they aren't even collectors is what I think gives G1 some of its intrinsic broad appeal. I dont get that feeling with cybertron or armada or what have you, that's just me.

    6. How often do you break your law?
I bought beast wars megatron when he was released...he's in storage right now while all my G1's are in three display cases. Since him I have not bought outside of masterpiece/universe-classics

    7. Do you think any other figures are good but still not get them?
I dont really pay attention to other figures. I looked at animated for a while but really didn't like the cartoony look of the characters...too overly stylized...imo, that's not what transformers is about, so i don't buy them. Just watch the cartoon.

    8. Do you ever want a figure other than G1 but feel it's not right to get it?
    No, never had that problem.

I might reply to this thread after it gets moved to the Toy Discussion forum, where it should've been posted in the first place.

I collect the best 'version' of G1 characters I can find, whatever the toy line, so I have eg - MP Prime, Alt Meister (with reprolabels), Titanium ultra magnus, revoltech rodimus, classics bumblebee.....

I've bought a few figures that don't really fit - Alt Shockblast, animated Blitzwing but I'll happily sell them when a better 'version' comes out.

G1 is the only time period I have an emotional connection with (mainly via marvel comics) so I've got little interest in other series or the new movie figures even if they're well done.

I collect G1 above anything else but I have greatly enjoyed the classics and animated lines. In general I approach newer stuff as if I like it I'll get it. If my G1 collection were closer to completion I'd probably be more interested in re-issues but since it isn't I'm really not.

    1. Do you collect Universe and Classics? Yes, but only the updated G1 characters.

    2. Do you consider Takara's figures as genuine G1? Yes.

    3. Even though you say G1 only, does that also mean you collect G2, and Beast series? I include G2 but not Beast Wars.

    4. How often are you tempted to break your law? Very rarely. But it's not a law I have. I'm just never interested enough in non-G1 stuff to actually buy them.

    5. Is it an obligation or is it just you think it's the only good series? I don't think that it's the only good series, it's just the only one I personally enjoy. Also, because G1 was my first experience of Transformers, to me *it is Transformers* Everything else seems wrong. Sideswipe has to be a red Lamborghini, etc. Stupid, yes, but that's how I feel.

    6. How often do you break your law? So far, never.

    7. Do you think any other figures are good but still not get them? Very rarely, but yes. I thought the Takara Movie Prime with the chrome was nice.

    8. Do you ever want a figure other than G1 but feel it's not right to get it? No, that would be silly. If I liked a figure enough to want to buy it, I would buy it. Assuming money isn't an issue, of course.

    9. Do you buy the custom attachments for some of these figures, such as City Commander or accuracy enhancing stickers? I got some custom heads for G1 Ironhide and Ratchet, but that's it.

    10. Which do you prefer Hasbro or Takara? Hasbro for vintage G1 and Takara for everything else. Hasbro made the original Transformers that I had as a child, but Takara stays truer to the original toys with their G1 reissues and redecos of the new Universe stuff.

    1. Selectively. If it truly gives me the feel of G1 cartoon or the G1 toy. ex: I love the Botcon Thundercracker classics, but I was a little disappointed at the non G1 deco on Classics Starscreams wings & disappointed w/ the blue missile launchers of universe starscream & general bland white color scheme, I think they cud have did a better g1 accurate paint job. I think the seeker mold is awesome, just don't like the majority of classics/universe officially released paint schemes. It would be nicer if they stuck to the G1 cartoon or G1 toy as reference, depending which ever one looked better of the two. Let me give examples of what I mean: Most would agree that G1 Cartoon Megatron & Starscream looked better than their toy counterparts. Likewise, G1 Devastator & Dinobots toys look more detailed than their animated counterparts. I like the classics seeker mold better than the g1 mold, b/c the wing placement is more cartoon accurate than the original g1 toys.

    2. Absolutely.

    3. I personally do not collect G2 or Beast series. However, I did pick up a g2 cliffjumper & beachcomber, b/c I liked the chrome red & chrome green variatioan. Color is very important to me, & I love certain chrome gimmicks, so it really depends if the colors "click" with me.

    4. Lol, there is no law, it just depends on if that figure feels like it represents the G1 cartoon & accurately depicts it to me.

    5. G1 has been the only series that I have enjoyed. I've given BW a chance, by watching the episodes, but I didn't like the voice acting nor the cgi style. I watched the 1st 2 seasons of TFA, trying to give it a chance, but found the animation style too super deformed & writing to kiddie for my taste. I have never bought a single BW or TFA toy.

    6. I typically only buy G1 toys, only Takara G1 Re-issues, cuz I don't like how hasbro modifies the reissues, ie-short smokestacks, elongated missiles, etc.
However, I have bought a custom g1 painted armada unicron, & took the wings off of E-Galvatron. If I see another line resembles G1 enuf, I may b tempted to pik it up, but it's gotta be pretty dam close, & no alternate g1 substitutions exist as a Takara G1 re-issue.

    7. There are, lol, but that is b/c I'm not a millionaire! I can not afford to pick up every figure out ther that I think is "good." They have to be excellent, in my opinion for me to pick them up, b/c quite frankly, I have over 300 TF's, & I'm running out of space!!

    8. No, if it close enuf to g1-ish, & no g1 substitute exists, ie-unicron, I will get it.

    9. Yes, all the time.

    10. Takara, they make more stuff that I like.
