I love them both, but have a soft spot for Galvatron. Love his colours, design, him voiced by Leonard Nimoy is legends are made of. Post Movie Galvatron is great by Welker, but loved Nimoy's voice just fit so well IMO.

As far as Megatron goes in Season 1/2 I felt sorry for him, because he was like not a super BAD guy. He just had his own mission, which the Autobots always got in the way of.

This. Season 3 is what I re-watch the most.

 

Megatron. Iconic look, iconic voice...and somehow more complex than the traditional 80's cartoon villain with their standard scheme-of-the-week.

 

But Galvatron got tricked easier because of his mental state. It was true that he became more vicious, but he also made dumber decisions. Yeah Megatron made his share of dumb decisions too but not on the level of Galvatron. Heck Galvatron even got brainwashed in the episode "The Big Brodcast of 2006." Speaking of which I've always wondered, how did Galvatron even get ahold of a tv in the first place? You know he had to have gotten one to have watched it since that's how the Quintessons were brainwashing everyone.

 

I love Megatron, but went Galvatron because I love how Bat Shit Crazy he is.

 

when I was a kid, watching g1, i was always so obsessed with Megs. after the movie, with Megs gone, i was so pissed off. I was like "who is this bat shit insane bastard!".... in my child mind Galvy was comedic in his insanity...Megs has more gravitas (i know that wasn't how he was really portrayed, but i think i edited events in my head as a child to make Megatron more impressive)... I've always preferred Megatron, even so far as to quit watching the cartoon as a child for several years after he was gone...

 

I woud argue that movie Galvatron was an awesome character, and we never really got to see that version explored beyond the movie.

Toon sunbow Galvatron was like an unintentional clown you can't help but laugh at, seemingly even MORE incompetent than Megatron, at least Megatron had a focus week to week (stealing resources) while TV toon Galvatron was all over the show. One week he wants to kill autobots, then on the next episodes he wants to beat up his own guys who are trying to help him, then flip flops back and forth. It's like he's Bi-polar.

I do like that in the Marvel UK comics, and IDW comics we saw a diff version of the character, who was more a credible threat (like movie Galvatron) and a real bad ass that other characters were rightly afraid of (like with Megs), and the insanity / mental instability angle was downplayed.

 

i vote Galvatron.
Megatron always has plans and they never work out.
Galvatron has no plans and just attack because he's crazy.
And he killed poor Star scream because he betrayed him.
While Megatron can't even kill Star scream ( or don't wanna ), while he betrayed him so many times.
And Spock was the voice of Galvatron in the movie.
The man with logic suddenly has no logic anymore, just madness.

 

I was always a UK comics guy, so while Megatron is a classic character, he was always presented as a bit of a maniacal loser. He gets his ass handed to him by Ratchet THREE TIMES... And Ratchet was beaten up by a human with his own wrench ><

Galvatron I never much cared for as a character, but he was certainly a credible threat. His ability to outwit Shockwave and tear through 2 timelines of opposition in Time Wars meant he loomed pretty large, certainly more so than Megatron. It's a shame that Megs didn't get better development, but the weak US stories always dragged the character down, while Galvatron was pretty much unhindered.

So yeah, I'd go Galvatron for pure menace. Shockwave was always the best leader though, for my money.

 

To be fair to Ratchet, they had him stand up to Megatron when he was the only autobot left in the US comics, and even then he did so hesitatingly, even saying that he had no chance against megatron, and ultimately his actions were to stall Megs, not like beat him properly or anything.
Basically he fought one of hose unwinnable Boss fights where you just have to keep going until the timer clicks down and the next scene is triggered.
I thought it was pretty cool to have the medic/non-combatant stand up to Megatron, even Megatron was impressed with Ratchet's Robo-Chutzpah in that comic!

 

Don't get me wrong, I love Ratchet as a character, he was always one of my favourites after the Warrior School story, but still pretty embarrassing for Megs - I can't remember Prime ever beating Megatron as convincingly  

When Grimlock was voted Autobot leader because he was "strongest" I always wondered why Ratchet didn't bring up that it was him and not Grimlock that defeated Megatron! Can dinosaur robots blush?

 

Megatron all the way. Galvatron was just bat $#!% crazy and incompetent.

 

It would depend if it was the sane or insane version of Galvatron.

I actually never really loved the 1986 new movie characters that much.

 

I see a lot of people talking about how incompetent Galvatron was.
But he took Cybertron and defeated the Autobots.
The Autobots had Cybertron in its entirety, and Galvatron reconquered it and completely routed their army.
If it wasnt for Spike and Fort Max the Decepticons would have won.
Yes, offcourse destroying the planet was completely incomprehensible at that point. But the fact remains Galvatron retook Cybertron and destroyed the Autobot army, and it didnt take him four million years to do it.
