The ratchet joint has been worn down over the years so it can no longer stand straight up in robot mode.
I've been told I could spread some clear nail polish or superglue on the joint. Any other ideas?

Aside from using clear nail polish, you could always find a junker and perform a parts swap.

What if you took the legs off and used a nail file and filed the teeth on both the legs and body back to points , think that may work ?

You could try to cut out some clear packing tape and apply it over the ribs, it should make it tighter, at least for display. Or try spacing out that spring with a washer or two, so it gives more tention on the teeth.
