skip the us original release, its missing all the god bomber parts and the overal design was cheapened bandai style.

theres no diferences in the us and jap version of the reissue though, other then the slightly shorter stacks on the smaller prime.

I'd spring for the Japanese God Ginrai reissue as well. BW256 is correct about the differences between the versions.

If you REALLY like orange, check out the Fire Guts deco. Photo up in a bit. :)

The original US G1 release doesn't have vac metal chrome on the bumper, the Powermaster engine and super robot legs, but it does have silver paint on the bumper. The Japanese version has the chrome in all those places. The Japanese and US reissues are pretty much identical to the first Japanese release, as far as I can tell.

The original release also has long smokestacks, which look a lot better in my opinion. Only the very first US release has those long smokestacks, everything else, Japanese G1 and all reissues have the short versions. The Japanese and reissue smokestacks are also slight remoulds, with little circular vents along the shaft, wherease the original smokestacks are just smooth plastic.

The Japanese version and reissues all have retractable fists in truck mode, whereas the original has one piece forearms and fists. The original G1 has milky grey plastic where the Japanese and reissues have a darker more silver plastic, like on the trailer for example. Also, the original G1 has red eyes on both super and small robots, but the Japanese and reissues have blue eyes for the small Optimus, like the cartoon.

Obviously the Japanese and subsequent reissues have the God Bomber extra trailer/robot. I think those are about all the differences between the versions, besides trivial things like the red and blue plastics used are very slightly different shades, along with the transparent blue used for the windows.

Check out these links too. Pictures are probably more helpful than words:

The US reissue has long, unchromed missiles for God/Apex Bomber. The original and Jap reissue have a short chromed missile.

If you're gonna get one, get reissue God Ginrai. He has a great finish (masses of chrome), they produced heaps of them & due to their plentiful numbers, He's relatively cheap these days. Sure he's a giant brick but he's also one of the best bricks in all of G1. :D
