I just rewatched the G1 episode Golden Lagoon which was a good episode but the part that really sticks out to me is the ending.

Beachcomber looks around at the once beautiful forest area that has now been destroyed due to the fighting of the Autobots and the Decepticons.
    Beachcomber: We won...........

That is a pretty poignant and bittersweet moment and it ends the episode. I thought it was actually kind of deep and revealing. It was probably one of the first moments in TF history where we really see the cost of this war between the Autobots and the Decepticons on things other than themselves. I know that angle has been explored a little bit more since then but it had a powerful message I think during the airing and even now. I also think it revealed a lot about Beachcomber's philosophy as well. Does this part stand out to anyone else?

Yeah, that was the like, the only good moment in G1. (good as in, characterization and plot, the situation itself was sad)

Too bad the rest of G1 didn't follow that trend.

That is the only episode that I remember clearly from when I originally watched it in 1984 or 1985 - it really stood out for the reasons you cited. TF in general hasn't shown the real costs of their war, this year's movie being no exception. The damage left behind looked more realistic than ever, but it didn't really resonate.

Fixed. Still, the GL was one of my favorites in G1. That, and Traitor.

Yeah, that really is a great episode. Very well written.

The cheesy dramatic music was put to good use in this episode. LOL

I disagree but respect your opinion. Maybe if you went back and watched them you would feel differently? The first airing of Beast Wars I didn't think it was all that great but going back about a year ago and watching them again I realized it is the second (some would argue first I know) best series out there. There are a lot of great character driven moments in G1 but a lot of them are subtle and not just "LOOK CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT" ideas. If you do watch them again let me know what you think.

Actually, it's funny you should say that.

Not long ago, I thought G1 was the best, just the cats ass, but then I dug up my old G1 tapes and rewatched all of season one and two (After just watching season three) and realized just how crappy a show it was. I'm sure in the 80's it was great, but looking back now I can't find very many reasons to like it other than nostalgia.

Maybe I wouldn't feel so strongly against G1 if people would stop saying that it's the greatest series ever, when it's really not. (Though it is the greatest when it comes to nostalgia)

BW on the other hand was an amazing show, mostly due to the animation. The characters looked like they were talking and interacting, they could emote, and have natural movements. I have yet to see a cartoon that can do that.

That Golden Lagoon ending has always stood out to me as one of the top moments of G1. Even as a kid it hit me like a ton of bricks. I suppose that's a personal thing with me though. Animals and their homes always hold some special thing for me, and that forested area was home to lots of animals. And Beachcomber realizing the futility of "winning" at that point was like the show pointing out how utterly depressing war can be.

I've had the supplies laying around to do a diorama of that scene for about two years now. I should really get around to doing something with that.
