The cartoon did not stop after the movie in the US. Season 3 came after the movie and also season 4 which was a 3 episode series called "The Rebirth" It featured the Target and Headmasters and was the official end of the Cartoon in the US in 1987.

Japan, however, as you mentioned kept making the cartoon. Their series that replaced The Rebirth was called "Headmasters". After that came Vicotry and Zone where one series, I am not sure which, featured the Powermasters and Pretenders. Hope that helps.

The cartoon was STOPPED in the US because of a general decline in popularity after the Movie.

The series that featured the Powermasters (Godmasters) and Pretenders was Choujin (Super-God) Masterforce, which came after Headmasters and before Victory.

I'm sure that they would have, if there had been a market for it. I guess there wasn't.

If you love the G1 cartoon you may not find the Japanese series' to your liking.
All my personal opinion of course, but:

HEADMASTERS is very protracted, could have been condensed to 10 episodes without losing any story and features too few characters (and too much Daniel!!!). You'd probably enjoy seeing a few G1 characters returning to life after their animated movie death (PROWL, SIDESWIPE & for a single shot, IRONHIDE) though and HEADMASTERS is, I think, the closest to the Western show.

MASTERFORCE is so unlike what's gone before you'd be staggered. Personally I like it, as it does try to do something new and the humans are nowhere near as annoying as those that have gone before (indeed, they're vital to the plot!). It isn't OPTIMUS PRIME that's featured though - It just looks like him so don't ever watch expecting PRIME to be his old self.

VICTORY is a bit more traditional, but all the worse for it. Way too much fighting and way too little plot. I couldn't even get through the Region 2 DVD set.... All three series are available on official R2 DVD sets in the UK if if you have a compatible player.

masterforce was probably the best of those japanese series, even though victory had the cooler figures, by the way.

Well, viewers back in 1986 apparently didn't think so.

Yeah... everyone was upset when they killed Optimus Prime in the first part of the movie. If Hasbro would have let him live, then maybe Transformers G1 would have continued on and on... well, that's what I think.

They did bring him back, but it was 2 seasons too late.

As I've read in multiple interviews, Hasbro had no idea that killing off Optimus in the film would be received so negatively by the public. To date, it's still one of the most massive outpourings--through the US Post Office--of fan outcry over a TV character being killed off.

But they got what they deserved using the movie just to sell the new toy line. If they hadn't been so greedy and exploitative and allowed Optimus to live... who knows how long the TV series might have lasted.

But then again, the "fad" with most kids had already run its course. Kids are fickle when it comes to what they play with and watch. As far as the TV series is concerned, I personally wouldn't have wanted TFs to keep going like what's been done with Power Rangers and Pokemon. With a few simple tweaks, they're still just the same thing over and over again.

I'd say a 3-year run was pretty fair for TFs. It's just been our fortune as fans that TFs have been "the comeback kid", and Hasbro continues to introduce new toy lines and new TV shows. Even if the shows largely suck (like RiD, Energon, Armada, and Cybertron), at least we keep getting new toys out of it.

Pretty much, what I was meant to say is that if they didn't kill Optimus Prime in the movie, then maybe G1 could have lasted a little while more longer than what it did. I can understand not many people would like long-running shows like Power Rangers (I didn't bother watching it after all of the original characters left and they have new ones), still... I wouldn't mind if G1 lasted much longer than what it did.

Me neither, as a diehard fan. But the shows were formula-written, toy-driven, and a little cheesy already--there would've reached a point where I would've been watching it just to watch it. But it would've just been repetitive. Even I would've eventually lost interest...especially since I was already in my late teens by the time the G1 ended.

Now, if G1 were updated with today's vehicles as a TV series with the kind of approach that BW and BM got (quality animation, writing, and cast) especially with the darker tone and character/story arcs, that's definitely something I would want to watch and would hope for many successful seasons.

Unfortunately, I just don't think that's going to happen. Meanwhile, there's the comics which have more appeal to adults anyway. That's something at least.

I actually really like the IDEA of having new leaders. I always thought there wouldn't have been such an outcry if during season 3 Optimus had been a major character from within the matrix, giving Hot Rod advice as a mentor. Rodimus Prime would still have been used, Optimus wouldn't have been completely out of the picture.

And if they kept most of the well-loved G1 characters, Bumblebee, Jazz, and Starscream included, then the cartoon would have continued to be popular.

    What about Beast Wars, BTW?
