So I picked up one today and I am having trouble figuring out the tape deck.

I know that both he and Soundwave are notorious for the tapedeck not opening but I took him apart and everything looks good. No pieces broken, nothing stressed etc.

So why won't the tape deck open and is there a trick to it?

I dug my old Blaster out the other day and it was quite difficult to press down the button to open the deck! It's the button furthest to the left (i.e. under the autobot symbol)

So you have to just push down on it?

Yeah, no trick. Just push the Eject button and the tape door will open. I got the Reissue Blaster.

I got it. Is it always so difficult or does it get that way with age?

I remember that always being hard to push/open and thats how they end up breaking. I would recommend not opening it just in case.

open it and lube it, up, reassemble, good as new (worked for me with 10 or so blasters)

If it gets stuck there is actually a little metal piece inside that is often the culprit - there are some good youtube videos that show fixing blaster step by step...
