And I need a little help, he doesn't look too good. A neighbor thought he was a Goose :) lol) he was flapping his wings around in our back yard when she noticed him. (Coincidentally a Goose was keeping guard by him, it was a little trouble getting the Woodpecker away from it) He doesn't seem to be a baby (all of his feathers are grown in) But anyway he doesn't seem to be able too keep his balance but is perfectly fine besides that. So me being the animal lover I'm trying to find any way I can help him. (And don't worry, I'm taking the necessary precautions to keep myself healthy)
We called the Wildlife authorities and they should be here in the morning but I'm afraid he might not make it :(
So if any of you out there know anything it would be a great help! Thanks!

I've dealt with many birds in the past and even now but ti doesnt sound too good from what you say. If he cant keep his balance, sounds like some bad trauma. Probably flew into something. A friend had a bird fly into a window and it didnt make it :( .

Hrm....well it is night time where I am. Right now he's huddled in a cage I found and leaning his head against the wall (he keeps moving it in a pecking motion down-wards) And he was found right by a tree....he seems to be able to hold onto a perch okay but when he's put on the ground he just flops over.

just keep an eye on the bird , the best thing you can do is leave it to the experts , you could end up doing more harm than good in trying to help it

That sucks, but many avian diseases are contractible by humans, so be careful.

Just keep showing it some love and hope for the best while waiting.
If it does'nt make it, atleast it won't die alone.
    That's my positive response,

I would just leave it be and let nature deal with it, or get a rock and end it's misery

Can't do that. The Pileated Woodpecker is a protected species, it just started making a comeback in the 20th century after being nearly wiped out. I'll have some pics up tomorrow, my PC tower is too old for my new mamory card and my Uncle (who is coming home tomorrow) Will download them onto his PC (protected by a password).

If a nearly wiped out species makes a come back won't they be overly inbred? (the revived species that is)

No, because the survivors that are doing the mating are not closely related. And if animals happen to be born that are retarded from inbreeding, they're avoided by potential mates, so those mutations and retardations don't get passed on.

It's like only a 5-6% chance that first cousins will have retarded offspring anyway.

It would be a good idea to just keep him in a quiet dark room if he makes it and try to find a bird sanctuary or wildlife rehabilitation center, they can help.
