I'm in the process of buying a house, and was doing a home inspection with my Dad. Everything went well, and the house is pretty sound structurally. As we were checking things out though, I found a dead bird in the master bedroom closet. The house has been vacant for some time now, so this seems odd to me. I'm not very superstitious, but I've heard this can be a bad omen. I've done some googling, but nothing consistent comes of it. Anybody here ever hear of anything to do with this? Should I consider not buying the house now? What do you guys think?

is it an old house? They can make nests in the attics and probably found a way into the home. I remember when the realtor took us house shopping, we found one that had dog shit in a closet.

I remember a bird got into the ventilation tube of a dryer at my grandma's house. Probably because it was by the garage, but still rather odd. I'd probably take a closer look over the house again, just you aren't surprised again after you move in (if you decide to).

it's a dead bird, not a dead drug dealer, or a dead gangster.

the only thing it's warning you about is how tricky that closet is to get out of.

You're considering not buying a perfectly solid house, just because you found a dead bird in a closet?

Just give it a proper burial. Wrap it up in a towel tightly, dig a hole and bury it. Usually what I do with dead birds or other animals I find while taking my dogs for a walk.

If you seriously believe that finding a dead bird is going to ruin your life, you are completely retarded. :D

Be careful, man! First, it's one dead bird. Then the next thing you know, BAM!

Seriously, I don't remember hearing anything about this being a bad omen. Like most have said, it probably just found it's way in somehow and couldn't get back out. I would be more concerned with where the opening is that allowed the bird inside in the first place.

Thought you meant woman for a moment when I read that title there. ;)

I wouldn't be too perturbed by it, it's sad but accident's happen all too frequently. :(

The only thing to bear in mind would be whether it came in through an open window or other means... in which case it might be a good idea to do a survey of the house.

And believe me, when omens come, they tend to be a little more obvious than a dead bird. ;)

    Famous last words.

Ha ha! If a dead bird is a bad omen, dead dog shit is an outright prophecy of evil!

    Voodoo!

I wouldn't say it's a bad sign, probably just the birds time to go.
Once, we found a whole family of mummified squirrels in the attic when we re-insulated a few years back. Crawled in through a vent and couldn't get back out.

Better make sure to eat it, then. I heard that eliminates the bad vibes.

You should probably check that the house wasn't built on the site of an old pet cemetary just to be on the safe side....

Or you could do it the 21st century way: cremate it. You don't have to do any digging, and throw the ashes away in a pond. That way the bird's one with the earth and all that mystical mumbo jumbo.

What? :p  Okay, to be serious, finding a dead bird in a closet would probably mean what others have said; there may be a bird nest up there in the attic, or perhaps this one bird just got lucky and managed to find its way into the house. If I were you, best you check for any holes in the house. That...and find another house.

If its what you are looking for in a house, don't let a dead bird scare you off.
