the fact that hes a bit player still manage to cause up a stir reminds me of how the sports world still overreact when it comes to gays.

I think this is not OK for me. I think gay men should admit before hand that their gay instead of doing it after they leave the team or company. Just image you don't know he's gay and you share the showers with him, share guy-thing jokes. I mean its a complete deception its like being betrayed.

I've never heard of John Amaechi...

...furthermore, I fail to see why "coming out of the closet" is so important to celebs. I could care less about their sexual orientation.

Or I guess he could come out while he's playing and be completely shunned by his team and so forth.

Just remember, it's ok to slap a naked guy on the ass if it's a joke and he's straight. Otherwise, it's a no-no.

    Agreed!

never heard of him either...as for the celeb thing, its their way of staying in the spotlight, or for some, getting the spotlight.

That's no news. Real news would be Elton John or Rupaul claiming they're straight.

IIRC, he has adopted children, perhaps part of his reason for trying to keep it quiet as long as he did was to protect them from almost inevitable taunting.

Probably for the same reason it's important to a gay man who is not a celebrity. It's not an easy thing to do, and probably even tougher when you're an athlete, due to the stereotypes and prejudices that are still prevalent, as evidenced by the notions in the post directly above yours.

    Wow..OMG fear the gays!!!

I love how some people assume that just because someone is gay, it must mean that they are sex-crazed maniacs that are going to rape every member of their own sex that they see naked in showers.

...or their politics or their favorite color, etc. We're paying them to entertain us, not "enlighten" us with their opinions and beliefs. Celebs talking about this sort of this is like paying for a hooker and then getting her opinion of the line-item veto afterwards.

This guy was paid to play ball. The fact that almost no one has ever heard of this guy based on his ball playing skills speaks more about him than who he sleeps with or which orifice he likes to enter during sex. Make a basket and I'll care about you.

i don't get viper2391's post - when i came out, i got harrassed horribly at my job, incidently by all the females in the office and not one guy - one of the items brought up from one of the girl's, is how the other straight guys in the office now felt about me, them always thinking i was checking them out or whatnot - i asked her if she felt, as a female in an office filled with straight men, like they were checking her out all the time or feeling threatened by them, and she said no, and i wondered why she thought the guys would think that i was checking them out or threatening them? her only answer: "because you're gay and it's different"

you wonder why he didn't say anything? it's because of attitudes like that that make ppl not want to share - it's not always the easiest decision to make in life, but one that sometimes just needs to be made

    just my 2 cents worth

Agreed. and the NBA would have been even worse.

and as far as this guy coming out..It's all about money. He was a mediocre basketball player, and his funds have likely run dry. So he's trying to make some money off of this. As long as there is interest, celebrities will keep doing it. If you are going to be annoyed at anyone, be annoyed at the Hollywood gossip market that eats this stuff up.

Wow, someone is gay. Who cares?

Its sexual orientation, not a mass murder.
