If I was living in Toronto, I would jump too. :)

That sucks though... Some kid in Quebec jumped but survived... Actually, I'm always amazed when they survive. I jump a few feet and my knees and ankles want to explode.

    Whoa. That's messed up.

I guess parents just assume it could never happen to their kid? They should really do something about that. Like make the balconies bigger or something.

I blame warmer weather and parents being senseless. Similar rash of kids drowning in pools going on in my area these days (prompting legislators to try and pass a bill demanding every pool owner have not only a locking gate, but an ALARM installed on their pool.)

I don't have kids so maybe I don't understand it that well, but it just seems ludicrous to me that you'd let a kid out of your sight long enough for him/her to get TO the balcony and then fall - none the less leave a door open or unlocked where upon said child could GET to said balcony without supervision.

See if it was a balcony in an American city the balcony would be too crowded with shit like rusted out barbeque's, old bikes, plants, lawn furniture, a kid wouldn't be able to get to the edge to jump.

A similar incident happened in HK, when a toddler (around 2 years of age) fell off from the 8th floor via a window. However, the kid survived - saved by falling a flower plot!

not to try and defend the parent or anything, but i've got a 13 month old son and you'd be surprised what he can do in 10-15 seconds if he knows that you're not watching him. kids that age take notice of when you're not taking notice and jump at any chance they can to get into what they're not supposed to. luckily i have the brains to keep the door to the room i'm in shut and his mischief is usually limited to pulling dvd's out of the shelf or yanking out every diaper wipe in the package and putting them in a heap. i also have a 7 year old daughter and she does tend to leave the door open and it doesn't take very long at all, maybe 20 seconds or so, for him to find his way to the other side of the house and get his hands in the bowl of cat food. kids that age need to be watched ALL the time. it's definitely not easy keeping up. if i had something like a balcony that thing would have a gate on it 24/7 without a question.

Makes mental note* When I get kid purchase following:
    1X giant steel ball
    1X 3 dm steel chain
    1X padlock

That should slow em down a bit :D

On the subject :(  stupid parent(s) at least they could have gotten one of those gates to put in the doorway.
