I'd call myself a skeptic, too, but I attend a school where something like this almost happened.

The guy in question is a substitute teacher... Nicest guy in the world, always happy. If you weren't feeling the best, he's the guy you'd find (I tend to avoid him to keep the negativity levels up, but still...). He also happens to be a magician (illusionist? I don't know what they're calling themselves these days). A few teachers got mad that a few class clowns didn't get their work done when this guy was subbing, so it was automatically his fault because of the magic tricks. They took it to the principal (who said it wasn't worth fighting) but I'd imagine it could have gone much farther, such as his job.

I hope the guy that was fired gets a better job somewhere where his talents are appreciated.

Wasting class time is one thing. This guy's being accused of witchcraft.

The best he can hope to do is kick up a big enough stink over this that the school board has to reinstate him for PR reasons. Legally, substitutes don't have any recourse for wrongful dismissal.

Could it be that he was just a shitty lazy sub and he is using this as an excuse to cover up his lack of teaching, lack of following lesson plans and improper child supervision?

Maybe the 'magic tricks' was one item on a list of failures he had and now he is trying to save his ass by making the issue absurd.

    IE: Shitty teacher.

Working as intended. At-will means you can be fired for any reason at any time, no explanation. I have no problem with this. maybe he should spend more time teaching and less time trying to controll a classroom through goofing-off.

Qualifications for being a comedian is more stringent. You need 2 jokes under your belt and it has to be performed in front of at least 1 person. Said person need not have laughed at the jokes though.

If every teacher got fired every time they had an "educational" party, showed an "educational" video or played an "educational" game, we would have like one teacher left in the United States.

I mean I went to a great high school but we still spent a lot of time messing around on computers or whatnot.
