I could definitely see it for G1 Star Saber. IDW Star Saber is a bit more Imperius, I think.

I'm gonna use this guy as an updated G1 Star Saber, I like the IDW-esque design but his characterization is.......... let's not talk about it.

 

I always felt like IDW Star Saber and Thunderclash should have swapped places.

 

Nah. Both of their personalities are direct lifts of their previous personae (for as little as Thunderclash had one), but they're both somewhat anachronisms juxtaposed upon IDW's greyer world view.

Thunderclash got off easy. His G1 techspec pretty much exalts his greatness in every matter (which is pretty much par for the course for all the Autobot leaders), so when you lift that directly to IDW, he comes off as a parody and caricature. A larger-than-life, grinning superhero who clashes (ha!) against the more cynical political backdrop.

Star Saber, meanwhile, is a champion of simpler times, where black and white are clearly divided, and he stands unwaveringly for all that is white. However, IDW universe is very grey, and that single-minded morality conflicts with the more nuanced atmosphere. That causes problems when the "right" thing to do would be to play nice with former villains. His black and white morality can't abide by that. Villains will always be villains, and anyone who sides with them must also be one as well.

 

I'll give you Thunderclash, but there was never anything religious in the anime version, he predates Primus being part of Japanese canon, but he was never authoritarian either. I wouldn't have minded what you were talking about if he were old knight or samurai in old ways of thinking that wasn't evil, because he's actively genocidal in idw. It was more that he was one of the only leader class Autobot generals left that hadn't been used and it needed to be one of the collapsing pillars of society, but Pharma and Tyrest were both new characters so Star Saber should have been replaced with a newbie. At least in my opinion.

 

Obviously IDW extrapolated a bit there, to justify why Star Saber is the way he is. That black and white morality of his is very akin to a "crusader" wielding his might in favour of a faith he does not question.

How about they just quit making them look like they got a boner in their pants? It was funny the first time, but are they really serious about making a entire line of horny bots ? 

 

Not that i'd be able to afford the bastard, but man a nemesis version would be epic.

I was not a fan of the sword at first hoping it'd look like the IDW Greatsword, but they pulled it off well for the final touches.
