Probably been pointed out before, but the specific Gundam design this guy takes heavy inspiration from is the metal build Destiny, as seen below. (Wings, torso, abs, forearm shields, overall spiky-ness & silhouette, etc.) Flame Toys definitely took the similarities further than Milne's original comic design, changing up the proportions & aesthetic.

This certainly isn't a bad thing in my opinion; they both look AWESOME, and the Destiny metal build figure is one of my favourite Gundam designs ever. And the original G1 Star Saber of course has Gundam roots both in its appearance and designer, so this is almost like a modern re-imagining of that.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but I'd go back to the old refrain of "If you don't like him, don't get him." The G1 figure and the incredibly G1-faithful masterpiece (who is fantastic) still exist. Personally, I love seeing characters re-imagined in a variety of styles; it's part of what makes Transformers so much fun!

This is incorrect. Robot Spirits generally run 4000-6000 yen range (~38-55 dollars at current rates) and are the usual 5.5-6" size figures you find in most poseable lines. Metal Build stuff varies but often is around 100-120 USD. These are a fair bit bigger, but they are massively overpriced relative to what they should cost.

wrong! as some Gundams have the ability to transform, do you think Transformers is the only brand to have transforming robots?

So, basically, we should just buy a Gundam instead then, as they also transform, look similar and are cheaper?

Oh, I dunno. I often see Gundam toys for sale. Not the exact ones discussed here, but they are available. As for the prices, they are just a tad cheaper where I live.

Can’t people who like starsaber just buy starsaber ?
This is the only idw starsaber one could possibly get , at least till someone else announces it officially or in 3p.
Why are you so insistent on people buying Gunpla instead ?

I'm not. I think this figure would actually be great for Gundam fans. It's just ironic that the main feature that distinguished THIS character, based upon Gundam, from the mall majority of Gundam figures, was removed.

Also, I didn't state "gunpla" should be bought, but that ANY Gundam would be preferable, including toys.

No, because no Gundam has Star Saber's design.

Is it possible for you to accept the idea that not everyone cares about transformations? Even if this Star Saber could transform, I would have it in robot mode for 99% of its life anyway.

Everyone's talking about how Gundam-looking this character is, yet nobody seems to have mentioned the Pat Lee-esque pelvic thrust that the product shot seems to be stuck in.

I'll mention it. It may be the reason I'm going to pass on this figure. Seeing it in that classic Japanese style pose was just too much for me, and I think I'm coming to terms with not buying this due to the style.

See you in 2 years when it's sold out and I regret this.

Sigh...no, it's because Star Saber was basically a "homage" to Gundam.

Inspiration and homage is the key word though.
