Wildfire sparked about 15 miles away from my house. In a matter of 2 hours it went from being 4 acres large to over 100 acres, and an hour later was up to 1,000 acres. They evacuated 8,500 homes with the cut-off line being about 4 blocks away from where I live. Here's an image, it doesn't show the scope of the fire (how much area it covered) but gives you an idea. By this time the fire was moving south (instead of north like it was originally).

Throat is sore from all the smoke today. Grr.

Well, I suppose fires certainly aren't very cool.

I'm still waiting for the "this is how they are lame" part...

Anyways, the weird thing about the pictures we always see is that it looks like a low burning fire. This *should* mean they are easier to put out. I wonder why there is such problems with them. If I ever get the chance to have a home near the woods, I'm going to trench it out like the Dinobots did in Megatron's Master Plan, so they fire can't get to me.

That doesn't seem very pleasant. The throat thing especially. I sympathize with you for that.

I went through something similar, not to that scale mind you. The throat thing goes away. What takes longer is the smell of a campfire which seems to be everywhere. Its not bad if you don't mind the smell, but it does drive some people nuts but what can you do?

That sucks. I hate fires. Late last summer my mom was evacuated from her house and in the past fires have affected my commute to work. Fires are lame.

Dang! KB..that's too close for comfort for certain.. saw the story on CNN and the last I heard was 17 homes evacuated with another 700 on standby and 1200 acres destroyed (but that might be old info)...and only 25% contained.. WOW! Stay upwind and safe.

    Update.. 1600 acres..50% contained.

Forty miles away from where I live, there was brush fire.

I watched it on the local news. I don't know if the fire was contained or not.

I saw all the smoke from that on my way home from work. Have they found out how it started yet?

You could blast that St Elmos fire song through the window. Neighbors will love that.

If you think having one near your house is lame, you should try putting them out. That really sux....

Getting nervous down here in Florida, since our Chief has told us that Emergency Command says this year will be worse than 1998 as far as wildfires go. And there were 90+ fires that year....

I live in Black Forest and I'm really nervous about fires these days. With the dry air, and high-winds it's dangerous. I'm really praying we get some rain this weekend. Hopefully a damn good pour as well.

I didn't think there was any rain in the forecast. It seems like it is always windy around the Springs too.

This fire season's gonna be nuts for CO. March averages 3 notable fires - there have been (IIRC) 20 so far.

St. Elmo's fire is a harmless electromagnetic luminescence though.

He should blare Hearts on Fire or Disco Inferno instead.
