I just marathoned the show for the first time myself on Monday and Tuesday of this week, and wish I had done it sooner. I just wish there would be one more movie to tie up a few more loose ends. I'd love to see how River's character develops given that everyone now knows just how much of a badass she is, as well as see how Zoe is coping following the events of Serenity. And..and...okay, maybe I just want more everything! I am now a bonafide fan.
Yep, it would have been nice if all these fans that Firefly has now would have been there from the beginning. Maybe then we could have gotten more than handful of episodes we did.
Well Fox aired the episodes out of order and didn't air 3 of them. I think they also moved it around to different nights. It was pretty much doomed before it could find a audience. These days if a show isn't popular in the first 5 episodes it's cancelled reguardless of quality. This happened a second time to Fillian in another fox series called Drive which was canceled after 3 episodes. There were 5, 2 weren't aired. The now famous show Cheers had dismal ratings the first season, but with better advertising and some faith in the series by the producers, it kept getting a bigger audience each season. Sometime audiences don't always tune into a show when it first airs, but later word of mouth or they catch it later when there is nothing else on. But they need time to saturate. Since most never make it to even a first season rerun you just don't get to see them, especially if they were aired against a popular show on a reoccuring season. Also there were a lot more SciFi shows on at the time. SCi-Fi had Lexx, Farscape and others. I think either voyager or Deep space Nine was still on, Babylon 5 was in reruns and I think it's short lived spin off was airing, and there was Andromeda, and Earth Final Conflict. Firefly may have seemed kind of similar to potential viewers at the time.
You have it right. They showed the pilot weeks after the show had premiered and if I remember correctly, it was chopped up into two pieces. Other episodes were aired out of order. On top of that, they did move it around to different nights, and they put it on hold for Baseball. Plus the 3 unaired eps, all of which were quite good and a shame they never had a chance to air...
Yep, FOX insisted on a more "action oriented" first episode so they made Whedon re-write the Train Job to introduce the characters. I remember when I watched the pilot when it first aired. I just thought it was a flashback episode . But ya FOX (and baseball) cut short John Doe too. Which IMO was another fantastic show that started that year too. But anything with the male 18-40 something demographic airing on Friday night at between 7-10 is almost doomed to fail anyway.
This is one of my favortie series. I too saw the movie before I watched the show. I thought both were great. And I felt the movie brought a decent amount of closure. I wish I knew about the show while it was airing, but I probably wouldn't have appreciated as much as I do now.
The movie was supposed to be season 2 of Firefly. And while I do love Serenity, it did feel a little rushed. Which isn't surprising considering Whedon had to compress somewhere between 10-14 hours of storytelling into a little over 2 hours storytelling.
I finished watching Firefly on Sunday. Awesome TV show and my favourite live action TV show of all time. I plan on watching Serenity later tonight, so hopefully it does Firefly justice.
As soon as I finish up Mad Men on NF, I think I'll run through Firefly again. Christina Hendricks for the win, to put it lightly. DAMN. It's the only show from Whedon I've ever had interest in.
Yeah, just watched it about an hour ago. Thought it was fantastic and the special features, like the Joss Whedon Q$A that I'm currently watching as I type this, are super awesome.
Especially when she is naked in Mal's cabin. Her whole monologue is sexy as hell and Mal's reaction is just classic.
I watched Firefly and Serenity in proper order start-to-finish a year or two ago and enjoyed them for what they were, but that's it. [followed that up with BSG start-to-finish. Now THAT was a show that blew me away...well, the first three seasons anyways] With the bigger movie budget, I found the look of Serenity too glossy and shiney, where part of the show's appeal came from seeing a future that was dirty and gritty. Don't get me wrong, it was a fun show with lovable characters, spot on writing, and a lot of charm. But I'm not really among the many fighting for it's return. If they do, great. If not, meh. Now Arrested Development on the other hand...
Report: Fox Is Actually Considering Bringing Back Firefly, For Real This Time, We Promise - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movie, TV News
Haven't read the full article yet, will add more to my post once I have. I just wanted to say... "firebronies"? You're joking, right? We're browncoats. Yeah, I don't see this actually happening. Even if Whedon wasn't busy, I don't think he'd necesarily want to bring it back. Even with Whedon theoretically onboard, who knows how much of the cast they could get back.
as much as i want it, i agree with the fellow above me's quote that under this sentence.... i just don't really see it coming back..... .....don't take this the wrong way, but F*** REBOOTS!!!!!
