This has probably been talked about/made fun of before (tfwiki), but what the hell was the deal in "The Ultimate Doom" when the Decepticons run away after getting fire retardant foam on them? This is an episode where they previously shot each other with lasers and missiles, but THIS is what gets them defeated? I don't know what I'm trying to say here, I guess that just when you're a kid you don't realize how dumb some things are

There's about 90% of that in the show. But as a kid watching it in the 80's and a fan of it today, I just don't care. It's still my favorite cartoon-show.

Things like that are why I preferred the G1 Marvel Comics.

They were afraid they'd get it in their mouths. Very toxic, you know.

Agreed. Still my favorite, just watched it again after a while and wondered how I missed that.

Yeah, this is one of those things that I unabashedly love despite (because of?) how ridiculous it is. There's quite a bit of that in G1.

I think it would be kind of tough for Jamie and Adam to seriously test the science behind any 'myth' which starts with "If a giant alien robot... " :)

Rationalizing here, since the foam thing was fairly stupid, but maybe it was a chemical that was particularly harsh and could seep through their armor somehow and cause internal damage? While the Decepticons may have armor designed to stand up to lasers, missiles and other standard ordinance, it may not be as effective against chemical attack or may not prevent the entry of harmful chemicals.

To use an analogy, a bulletproof vest will protect you from being shot, but isn't going to help much if the room suddenly fills up with tear gas.

If it was so dangerous to Transformers, why was it used inside the Ark as, presumably, a fire-safety system?

'Cause a fire inside an operating space vessel is (potentially) even MORE dangerous to Transformers? :)

    Or to quote/paraphrase ST:TNG for a sec:

"What if I had been under that thing when it went off?"

"You would have been standing in the fire."

Or theres the episode where Megatron keels over after getting about half a cup of paint sprayed into his chest.

Ironhide shot out foam, didn't he? And don't all fire truck TF's have the ability to shoot foam? Can't be corrosive if it's inside their...insides?

In the end, it's just funny for the way Megatron says "fire retardant foam!" as if he's gasping in terror

Ironhide, Inferno and the various other foam-sprayers may be built specifically to withstand the harmful effects of the chemicals. Or, they may keep the foams stored within a sealed reservoir in their bodies that keeps the chemical away from vital systems (ie - like acid in the human stomach).

Yeah, maybe it just feels really icky to them and they're just not down with that.
