No question about it, when Christopher Reeve's Superman was on screen it was magic. He was the perfect blend of larger-than-life godhood and next-door "nice guy" for Superman. And though his performance as Clark Kent has come under fire in recent years as being too clumsy and klutzish I still think it's a great one; the idea is that he's so clumsy and goofy that people automatically assume he's a geek and either ignore him, or just underrate him. No one would assume that this mild-mannered reporter was indeed a magnificent hero; even when Lois caught on to the identity, she dismissed it instantly thinking it was absurd.

These clips show just how good Reeve was:

    Superman Disguise - YouTube

I wish Henry Cavill well, and hope he makes his Superman a good one. But so far, Christopher Reeve is THE Superman for the ages.

I agree on Christopher Reeve. Brandon Routh could have been good had the movie clung so much to the Donner films. Tom Welling is great even though he never flew or wore the suit for like the majority of Smallville.

I'd go with Reeve myself out of all the ones we've gotten so far, although I have to concede that I actually like his portrayal of Clark better in "Superman III", where he's still somewhat klutzy but it's more subdued.

Reeve still has the crown. Routh was great but the story/plot of the movie he was in hurt his depiction.

Christopher Reeve was the perfect Clark Kent/Superman. He played both Clark and Superman so differently, but they still felt like the same person to the audience instead of two wildly different characters. He is definitely in my top five comic book movie casting choices of all time right up there with RDJ as Tony Stark and Heath Ledger as Joker.

I'l reserve my judgement until next year when Henry Cavil takes on the mantle next summer in the Man of Steel.

Reeve will always be the best. He was the one person who was capable of making Superman real, for the first time. I mean, we had the series in the '50s which wasn't bad, but it was TV. For big screen, you gotta go big, and Reeve brought his A-game.

Routh was an excellent second choice, but as it was said, he got shafted.

Welling, never watched the show, but I did see the final minutes of the series finale and he looked pretty good, but still...eh.

Cavill has big shoes to fill, but he looks like he could pull it off. If he can hide his accent, and do it well, he might be able to be on Reeve's level.

Superman II hands down. Anyone who says Superman Returns gets tomatoes thrown at them.

I have never liked any of the live-action Superman films but Christopher Reeves' portrayal is one of the few saving graces from the old ones.

Superman:The Movie. It's nearly spot on to the comics(of the time, of course) and the special effects weren't all that bad(again....for it's time.).

Reeves is still the guy, but Routh couldve been it had it not been for a stupid re-hashed plot that was Superman Returns

Definitely Reeve, but I have high hopes for Cavill's Superman.

Reeve was a real life Superman, but as far as movies go, we need a good, modern take on the character.

I just wish people would get his name right. It's Reeve, not Reeves. Reeves was George in the 50's.

Routh did a great job but the movie's terrible story kept him from truly becoming Superman, thank you Bryan Singer.

I am completely unfamiliar with Cavill's abilities as an actor, but I'm hoping they can do the legend right.

Reeve...definite the perfect Supes IMO. His mannerisms were so good like they were straight from the comics.

Reeve. Though I really enjoyed Routh's impersonation of Reeve playing Superman.
