Knights of the Old Republic. That game is total win. Played it like 6 times or so. Also, HK47.

    FFVII

Since I didn't own a game system until the orginal playstation I never really got a chance to play an RPG. So this was my first one, and sadly I haven't really liked an RPG since. Or at least not as much as that one.

Opposite for me, but barely... I could play FF6 to death, in fact I did when it came out on GBA... but Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece in a circuit board. No game has been like it since, and probably never will, even Square couldn't match it when they made the sequel.

Knights of the Old Republic, I've played it through a few times as well, just to see all the different endings.

Jade Empire is also very very good. I can't wait for Mass Effect, another Bioware RPG, and it'll be on the 360!

As for Japanese RPG's, the only ones I've actually played for long periods is FF7 (the only Japanese RPG I've ever finished), currently playing through (slowly) FF3 on DS.

I dunno, I like Japanese RPGs well enough, but their structure (specifially events where you absolutely must be a certain level to even remotely pass, ie, boss battles) tend to be major sticking points, and if I get stuck on a game too long, I forget about it.

The west does produce decent RPG's but not very many of them. What was Elder Scrolls: Oblivion on 360 like? I've been eyeing that up, especially as its out now on budget...

Some are like that, but then you get others where level doesn't matter and you can use clever tactics to win. I've played the Wild Arms series and the only one that really makes you level up is the fourth, and then only to handle the secret bosses who're way overpowered. Generally I find if you make sure you have the best equipment you can afford and fight every battle you get into, rarely if ever running away, you end up at a decent level to get through the next bit of the game.

The Wild Arms games would have to get my vote here. Decent though not outstanding stories, but they are so much fun to play with just the right balance on difficulty and plenty of extras. Alter Code F, the remake of the original, is my favourite right now. Wild Arms 4 was very clever though, the boss fights on that made you use your brain and frequently had some clever twist to them, but overall it wasn't quite as good as its forebears.

As a series it is worth checking out.

I also enjoyed Chrono Trigger and Valkyrie Profile, two excellent games right there.

KOTOR and the MD version of Buck Rodgers is the entire list of RPGs i've ever enjoyed playing. I thought that Mario RPG was pretty decent as well, althougth my interest tailed off before I made it to the end.

Its not that I dislike the genre, but fantasy in almost any flavor bores me to tears regurdless of whether its the beardy D+D sort in western titles or the Japanese type stuff. I don't particularly like the play style in the latter sort of game either.

I'm looking at Mass Effect, but i'll probably wait a couple of years to see if a PC version shows up.

Dark Savior and Beyon Oasis both for the Saturn, even though the term RPG is kind of dilluted any more.

Fallout and Fallout 2, as punching people, Gecko, Mutant in the groin was fun.

Chrono Trigger, followed closely by Panzer Dragoon Saga and Legend of Mana.
