Final Fantasy IX. Brought back the old fantasy elements that were missing from 7 and 8, had great characters, a story that actually pulled me in, and the world itself was full of wonders. X and X-2 effectively killed my interest in the series forever. Second would be Secret of Mana, not for the story, but because the game is just an absolute joy to play. Third would be Final Fantasy VI. everything about that game is just about perfect. I dread the day they remake it.
Wow, I see KOTOR showing up a bit, but I have to say Mass Effect blows that out of the water on every level AND it's an original IP. Anyways, when people ask this question I like to say Final Fantasy 8 because it stirs up controversy. But, to be honest, FF4, 6-8, 10, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana, and Mass Effect all get perfect scores from me. So, I really just feel they're the best out there.
When I was thinking what I was going to put down I went with KoTOR over Mass because KoTOR seemed more revolutionary to me and impressed me so much at the time. Mass is amazing but playing it felt more like a natural progression from KoTOR then something totally new.
I've always taken it to mean the first one. Mainly since I was big into rap in the 90's and that was a common battle cry back then. Final Fantasy VII FTW!!!!!!!
That makes sense. I don't always feel that originality really counts for more then how much fun I had with a game, and I just had more fun with Mass Effect thanks to everything being tweaked from KOTOR. Plus, KOTOR's loading times drove me nuts.
Ocarina of Time is the greatest in my books! Majoras mask and Final Fantasy 7 and 8 were also awesome. N64 and PS had some of the best RPGs around.
Chrono Trigger, far and away. As an offbeat nod, I'll have to say I was surprisingly fond of Illusion of Gaia.
One time I made it all the way to the castle at level 1. Somehow I was able to run away from every fight till I got to the front gate. I ran into a golden golem or something like that. He hit me once and did around 100+ points of damage to me. It was hilarious. Also, add Chrono Cross and Vagrant Story to the list. I forgot about those. VS has one of the best fighting systems I've ever seen. It's a major shame it's not used at all anymore.
Wow, another FF9 fan. Yes on all accounts. Before 9, FF6 was the last time that I became fully engrossed in a Square world. 7 was great, don't get me wrong, but 9 will always top it in my book, because it reminded me of the feeling that 6 brought.. Recently, I have to hand those trophies to Mass Effect, but not leave Oblivion out of that glory.
That would require more time than the game is worthy of being spent upon it. Let's leave it at you taking that over SoM
My favorate RPG of all time is this.... *FACE PUNCHED!* I mean, it's Deus Ex. The game is an awsome cyberpunk setting, there are so many ways to play the game through and the story is just incredable. There's also 3 different endings to the game and each one of them are amazing.
I love SoM but SoE, while infinitely easier had this odd, odd charm to it. The first time my dog attacked a raptor I knew I was in for a different game.
I know it wasn't the most popular in the series, but Dues Ex on the Xbox (the most recent one) was amazing. That game sucked me in like no one's bui'ness
chrono trigger can't be beat. sometimes games are made that just can't be duplicated, and chrono trigger is the definition of that game.
Another fan of FF9 here. I played the hell out of that game. Had the battle and boss music stuck in my head for years. 8 and 7 never really impressed me, nor did any that followed, but I really enjoyed 9. Even though I never finished it. Friggin' Deathguise.
