I'm looking for some new books to read but I'm not looking for any superhero material. I'm looking for some good sci-fi, fantasy, alternative and indie books. Here's some of the stuff I like. I'm more loooking for paperbacks too.

    Sci-Fi--
Metabarons. This book is more like sci-fi-fantasy. Its sort of like a mash of Lord of the Rings with Star Wars with... cowboy westerns. Just a fun book, three volumes have been published AFAIK.

I also like some of the Star Wars paperbacks but I'm semi-burned out on Star Wars and a lot of the books, IMO, can be awful.

    Fantasy--
The New Conan book from Dark Horse. Another fun book. Just Conan the barbarian doing his thing. Bashing skulls, fighting monsters, wizards and corrupt governors.

Bone. Enjoyed it, didn't think it was the best thing ever but I enjoyed it.

    Alt and Indie
Ex Machina. Ex-superhero is now mayor of NY. Mix of politics, mystery, crime and sci-fantasy. Super great book.

Optic Nerve. Semi-indie book about relationships and people with f-ked up problems. Rarely comes out but its great.

That's all I can think of now.

Transmetropolitan! It's basically Hunter S. Thompson, but in the future. Incredibly entertaining and surprisingly a pretty believable picture of how the world might look in a few decades. It drags a little around the 6th or 7th TPB, but everything before and after that is pure comics gold.

Also, if you haven't picked up Pride of Baghdad yet, DO IT NOW. It's got some of the best artwork I've ever seen in a comic and the story is absolutely heartbreaking.

Speaking of heartbreaking, check out Maus, too. It's a retelling of Art Speigelman's father's experiences in Auschwitz. It won a Pulitzer Prize and beat out Watchmen for the #1 spot on Wizard's top 100 graphic novels of all time.

If you're looking for on-going series, check out Fables and Criminal. Fables takes what could have been a ridiculous idea (fairy tale characters in the real world) and turns it into this really awesome kind of urban fantasy epic. Criminal is a new crime comic by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. It's only gotten up to issue four so far, but it's already packed a load of noir goodness into those four issues.

Ex Machina as the current running book. I'd probably like Y the Last Man but never got into it early so never bought it.

For past books, without a doubt, I loved Preacher. it is my ALL TIME favorite read.
