I love Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. If it has anything to do with Gundams or Miyazaki, I am there. I like Bleach, but only the first two seasons. After that I just lost interest.

My favorite character of all time, is Noin from Gundam Wing. She's just such an honest, emotional character. And I love her VA. Another favorite is Rukia from Bleach. She's a little firecracker.

Oddly enough one of the most boring anime shows I have ever seen is also my top tier favorite, Gasaraki! Imagine an anime were Tom Clancy invented the mechas and that's what you get.

Next down the list is the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (oddly enough that too is another complex and "boring" show compared to others), Cowboy Bebop, the original Macross, The Vision of Escaflowne, Gundam 8th MS Team, Martin Successor Nadesco (perfect blend of serious & comedy) and uh... That's all I got that really stands out.

I find myself not really enjoying shows that have the typical high school establish itself as a status quo for the rest of the series.

As far as characters go well....
There is Major from Ghost in the Shell
    Max Genius from Macross
Darth Vader (there were mangas it counts :B)

Im sure there are others, but I gotta sit and think about who are favorites and not just characters Ive seen and liked.

Neon Genesis Evangelion / Rebuild of Evangelion

One of the first really young adult anime I ever saw during its first broadcast run in 1994. It has coloured my opinion, tastes and even my own limited creative outlets in ways I didn't think were possible. The show is by no means perfect, around the the midway point the director went off his meds, the execs started embezzling funds for hookers and blow (and only half of that claim is false) and the infamous 'weird psudo religious plot point' button got hammered to the point of abuse. Indeed its infamous swan song, The End of Evangelion, has one of the most simultainously beautiful and terrifying examples of the end of the world I've ever seen, to say nothing of unique.

The show aslo gets a lot of flack for its characters seeming to just start out as standard stereotypes and then tumble into an abyss and just get worse: I liked it, it was like the dark end of character development. People did change, but due to several factors, nearly none of that change was positive.

The battles range from being pretty run of the mill (3rd Angel), different (11th Angel) terrifying (13th Angel), mind bending (12th Angel) and at least two cases of undistilled fucking awesome (14th Angel and Eva02 vs the JSSDF and MP Evas). Rebuild even does the aforementioned 14th Angel battle again, and manages to ratchet the awesome up past 11.

Favourite character, probably young Shinji Ikari himself. I know, he whines, complains, loses his nerve (hahaha, pun) at the worst possible times and is generally a bit of a wuss. I do find myself forgiving him greatly because.....he's 14. One of the series major high points is what I'd call a reasonably believable sliding scale of what happens when you get emotionally vulnerable and socially retarded teenagers and put them in charge of psychicly controlled weapons of mass destruction with no visible or meaningful support structure. In other words, it turns the major conciet of most Giant Robot anime, that the 14 year old kid with more balls than brains is somehow a better fit in the cockpit for the giant death robot than say a police officer, or soldier or other adult, on its head and shows how much a shitty idea it actually is.

And yet....I love it to death.

I don't know if I have one specific favorite anime. I was rather partial to Outlaw Star back when it was on Toonami. I should watch that again.

As for Manga: I'm fairly into the Battle Angel series. It's like Ghost in the Shell on acid.
