I'll cruise Youtube for some of this stuff on occasion, and it never fails to bring back a bunch of memories. For whatever reason, I started singing the theme to The Gummi Bears on my way home from work yesterday and kept driving my girlfriend nuts with it the rest of the evening (80s cartoons are mostly lost on her...go figure). Plus, that song is just one rock hard tasty groove. So tonight, I googled "80s cartoon themes" and found this site, on which some dude posted his top 10 favorite 80s toon themes...along with a bit of reasoning behind his picks: http://completefuckery.blogspot.com/2007/02/top-ten-cartoon-theme-songs-of-80s.html After that, I took a look on Youtube directly, and found this vid (30 straight minutes of 80s toon intros): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bto7l3cKhvk Lots more on Youtube than those, of course, and good times fo sho. I'd have to say that my favorite is either Gummi Bears or Duck Tales.
Anybody remember Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?? Corny as hell, but I recall watching it all the f'n time.
Never did see the movies, that I can recall anyway. I just looked up the toon theme and realized that I totally forgot about that goofball dude that had the parachute perpetually attached to him...funny stuff.
Bah....I must just be too old. My favorite themes were earlier than those. I loved the themes from Fat Albert, Battle of the Planets, Banana Splits, and the old dubbed toku stuff like Spectreman and Space Giants.
However I don't think anything can beat the opening of the GI Joe movie. Three minutes, twice as much action as the entire rest of the movie, "deadly Eskimos". Aw yeah.
My current favorite cartoon themes...Metalocalypse and 12 OZ. Mouse. I've never even seen the latter show, but that's a good theme. Ren and Stimpy had a great one, too. Now, in the early 90's, there was an album of covers of old cartoon theme songs. So from that, you got some of my faves...Helmet's version of "Gigantor", The Butthole Surfers' version of "Underdog", and the greatest thing ever, the Ramones' version of "Spider-Man".
I loved Pole Position http://youtube.com/watch?v=OR93W-SIoug and Mighty Orbots http://youtube.com/watch?v=0qiFRD0NLzY (man, that looks really bad now, but I loved that as a kid) Sport Billy was another one I loved http://youtube.com/watch?v=huJlDsfXf5U Superted http://youtube.com/watch?v=OZg74STOfig and the last two I'm going to post (because Count Duckula and Alias the Jester aren't something I'm going to look up) Danger Mouse http://youtube.com/watch?v=PrM0E9pag8E and Bananaman! http://youtube.com/watch?v=lbPxRAeClJA (okay, one last... since no one will get this one... Telebugs! http://youtube.com/watch?v=lbPxRAeClJA - sorry, full episodes on youtube only...)
Some of my most favorite cartoon themes: Transformers G1 Beast Wars ReBoot ThunderCats The Pirates of Dark Water Swat Kats Freakazoid! Mission Hill Gargoyles
They were all good. I liked Duck Tales, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, TFs, even Muppet Babies was admittedly catchy. And Pole Position was definitely a winner.
Eek the Cat( Any into with that kind of riff is gold. Happy Tree Friends (so annoying, it had to be good)
