While saying "fat people are endangering the world's food supply" may be an oversimplification, there's more than a few studies that have implied how much people in the developed world consume, and much more importantly, WHAT and HOW they consume, are detrimental to the consumption habits of the rest of the world and the environment as a whole.

That "there are people who are skinny and eat a lot" doesn't shake the overall trend of increasing weight and obesity in the developed world (especially if those skinny people are not typical), especially when the crux of the conclusion is related to how much people are eating, not how fat they are as individuals (despite what the headline of the article is).

In discussions like this, it's important to not hark on exceptions. There are some thin people who can eat more than overweight or obese people. These people are exceptions. The majority of thin people can't or choose not to eat as much or more than obese people. Feelings will be hurt by this truth, but it won't be the first time the truth has hurt. Won't be the last either.

The real problem is how much food is wasted and thrown away each year, not consumed.

    That article is scapegoating.

Obesity isn't just caused by overeating. Inactivity plays a large part, too, and unfortunately the world is getting a lot more sedentary (i.e. desk jobs, driving, etc.). Not to mention quality of food contributes to obesity, too.
Food shortage also has a ridiculous number of contributing factors. Serving portions have been steadily increasing while the "clean your plate" mentality has been going down, resulting in a lot of tossed but perfectly edible food.

I'll answer that question when I'm done eating this huge piece of cake and drinking this two liter Dr.Pepper.

While this is arguably makes more sense, I still like my theory better.

Pluto is currently along it's closest approach with earth, which is why this time was chosen to launch a probe, which will reach it's destination in 2015.

While inefficiencies in food use, storage, and transport are certainly troubling and something worth correcting, they are relatively low compared to the volume of food actually consumed, at least in the overall context of this study. I completely agree that every pound of food that goes bad and is thrown out is a pound that could have been put to better use though. It's a staggering amount in total (some forms see as much as a 30% loss), and the sad irony is that food loss occurs disproportionately in the developing world where technological and resource limitations prevent the use of many forms of modern food preservation, while food WASTE is much higher per capita in the developed world. Losses at each step in the supply chain are inevitable, but I completely agree, it's something that needs work.

Maybe we'd have more food if people stopped having so many babies.

Yeah this is stupid. Not everyone is fat because they over eat. I put on weight because of 2 years of depression where I was unemployed, went to bed at 4am got up at 1pm, ate one meal a day if I was lucky did nothing but job search on the computer and drank nothing but soda. My body went into starvation mode and now I'm paying the price by having to get rid of the extra weight.

It's really stupid to lump that all up in one nice little package when the world isn't a nice little package. Different situations and scenarios.

If you disagree, that's fine. But don't call it stupid. Just because you don't agree with someone, doesn't mean they're "stupid." That's name-calling. Try harder.

It's a testament to the lack of personal drive many people have. Taking an elevator instead of going up 1-3 flights of stairs, driving to some place that's only a 5-10 minute walk when they don't have to bring anything back like groceries. Consume, consume, consume, and little effort is made to expend.
