Right, but that's an average speed of 36.49 mph over the 6.13 seconds. Remember: the kitty started at zero. I'd imagine the final speed at the finish line was much higher. Similarly, if we clocked her going 100 meters when already going full tilt, the time would be much shorter.
It would be so awesome if we could somehow cross breed cheetahs until we eventually had mini domesticated versions fuck bengal cats I'll go with the lil cheetah
Cheetahs are very cool, but they're not quite that cool. They're so over specialised they're in greater danger of going extinct. Even without man being involved, they have problems competing with other big cats. One serious problem they have is that they're completely out of energy for a long period of time after a sprint...during which they're vulnerable to their kill being stolen by other big cats like lions.
To say nothing of a lack of genetic diversity putting them at greater risk for extinction due to disease. That's leopards. Cheetahs aren't so great at climbing, so they just gorge as fast as they can and run if they have to. Which unfortunately, is most of the time, thanks to lions, leopards, hyenas, and other large predators. Keep in mind that most other large cats can climb trees, as well. So they're more into fast food than a rooftop patio.
That statement doesn't make any sense. Their claws cannot retract. Therefore, "they do not have retractable claws". If the "sheath" structure is absent, they cannot be retractable because they can't go anywhere. They still have claws, but structurally they're also a little different, a bit more like cleats, meant to spike into the ground and give traction while still being useable to hold prey. Cheetahs are tamable (not domesticatable so far). A few ancient peoples had them as hunting animals for royalty. Cheetah "Cheetahs are easily tamed. Sumerians were the first people known to tame cheetah and Egyptians deified them. Throughout history they have been kept in captivity. Akbar the Great of India kept 9,000 cheetah in his 45 year reign (1555-1600 AD). Despite his efforts to breed them, only one litter was produced during that time. They have been used by the Pharaohs, royalty and even by the emperor Charlemagne for hunting and as symbols of nobility." - Coeloptera
Cheetahs are awesome! I'm glad they actually show the speed. I hate seeing cheetahs running in slow motion.
Its true their claws are structurally different, for traction instead of focused on prey catching (otherwise they'd catch on the ground in a bad way while running, right?), but the statement does, in fact, make sense. The muscle structure for the retraction of the claws is still present. If the cheetah wanted to, it could still extend or retract the claw the same way a normal cat does, that is, to move it back or forth. The lack of a sheathe doesn't mean they can't retract them, just that there's little point. They DO go somewhere, its just slightly farther back from where they were. I imagine this could be used for the cheetah having slightly more/less traction during running, or perhaps easier self-grooming with the paws. The point is, they can retract their claws, there just isn't a special sheath for them. It still counts as retracting, though this is mainly an issue of semantics. Why do you figure cheetahs are so easily tamed? Even today, they can be found in zoos all over the world, but wouldn't one think that a cheetah would require a large range to run over in order to remain healthy and happy? But then, I suppose, much like housecats, a more sedentary lifestyle simply agrees with them.
