Sticker shock is a weird phenomenon. I mean, would you rather have 5 figures that cost $200 each, or 50 figures that cost $20 each? Sure in the latter case you will in all likelihood end up with 50 pieces of utter crap that do nothing but collect dust on the shelf and occasionally topple over requiring more time to rearrange and organize them, but because you will be spending that money in bite sized chunks over a longer period of time, it won't seem nearly as egregious.

 

That's my whole point though - just because something costs more doesn't mean it's less affordable, since people are far more willing to spend greater sums on larger quantities of cheap stuff. In any event, toys, especially high end "adult collectibles," are luxury goods and companies should not try to skimp on quality to make them more affordable. Arguably, Transformers only became successful in the first place because the G1 toys were MUCH more expensive than competing action figure lines, but this actually made them more desirable to kids because they were a sort of aspirational unicorn.
